Warsaw Schools Enrollment Up Almost 100 Students

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Superintendent Dr. Craig Hintz Monday night told the Warsaw School Board that enrollment at Warsaw Community Schools is up this year by almost 100 students, and the school corporation is in compliance with Indiana law regarding its textbook rental program.

Official student count day was Sept. 16.

“According to our data, our enrollment is up 95 students compared to this time last year,” Hintz said.

In October 2010, enrollment at the high school was 2,053 students. On Oct. 17 this year, the high school’s enrollment was 2,136.

Hintz said enrollment at the two middle schools was down a bit, but enrollment at the elementary school levels was up.

Enrollment for Edgewood is 537, down from 553 in 2010. Lakeview Middle School’s enrollment this year is 522, down from 535 in 2010.

The total enrollment for the elementary schools this year is 3,765, up from 3,724 in 2010. Individual school enrollment numbers for 2011 are: Claypool, 372; Eisenhower, 462; Harrison, 566; Jefferson, 509; Leesburg, 491; Lincoln, 467; Madison, 499; and Washington, 399.

During the past few months, Hintz said, there have been inquiries and questions regarding Warsaw Community Schools’ policies and procedures on textbooks and workbooks. A parent has asserted that workbooks can not be charged to parents at 100 percent of the cost, among other discrepancies.

Hintz said Indiana School Board Association legal counsel Julie Slavens sent WCS a letter last week describing the definition of workbooks and textbooks. The state allows school corporations to charge 25 percent for textbooks and 100 percent for workbooks, Hintz said.

As for class fees being returned to parents as a parent had suggested, Hintz said WCS also is in compliance with the fees it charges. All those fees go into WCS’s textbook rental program.

“We believe we are in full compliance,” Hintz said.

As for classroom kits, one is purchased for each classroom. The cost remains the same over a period of six years. If a classroom is not filled, the classroom kit remains with that classroom. If WCS has to buy additional kits, the fee stays the same as the cost as when the classroom kit was adopted.

Kent Adams, board member, said basically WCS has complied with all state statutes. Hintz said yes they have.[[In-content Ad]]
