After 26 years with Warsaw Community Schools, Athletic Director Dave Fulkerson is resigning, effective June 30.

The announcement was made at a special Warsaw School Board meeting Monday night.

In his letter of resignation dated Dec. 17, Fulkerson wrote to WCS Superintendent Dr. Robert Haworth, "... I have enjoyed working with not only the student athletes, but also the entire student body during my 26-year tenure with Warsaw Community Schools.

"I appreciate the opportunity granted to me by the superintendent and the school board to continue with Warsaw Community Schools as an independent contractor for the 2008-09 school year. This contracted position will be as associate director of athletics."[[In-content Ad]]Fulkerson's duties in his part-time job as an associate athletic director will include implementing special fundraising events and assisting with capital campaign planning and execution; designing, implementing and managing an annual written operating plan for athletic fundraising; identifying, cultivating and soliciting prospective major athletic benefactors for capital projects, endowments and planned giving; identifying, cultivating and soliciting prospects for the annual fund; and other fundraising responsibilities.

The school board unanimously approved Fulkerson's resignation Monday. Fulkerson was not present at the meeting.

As an independent contractor, Fulkerson said he will receive $47,000 for 2008-09. His contracted wage for the 2007-08 school year is $85,376.

Board Vice President Dan Robinson thanked Fulkerson for his "excellent" service to Warsaw schools and athletics.

Gene England, board secretary, said he's known Fulkerson for 26 years. "I know he has a little age on him, but we have to tip our hats off to him. He's done a wonderful job for us," England said.

He's done not only a wonderful job for the school corporation, said board member Delores Hearn, but also for the entire Warsaw community.

During a telephone call this morning, Fulkerson said he appreciates the 26 years in which he has been fortunate to be the director of athletics for Warsaw Community Schools. He said he also has been very fortunate to have worked with very good people.

"The most enjoyable experience I have had is being involved with the kids - athletes and non-athletes. That's what all educators are in it for," said Fulkerson.

As an educator, if you can have a positive effect on one student a year, to inspire them, to turn their life around, Fulkerson said you are getting the job done. At Warsaw Community High School, Fulkerson said he sees that every day with teachers and coaches.

During public comments of the school board meeting Monday, former school board member Gordon Vanator said he and Fulkerson have been friends for more years than Fulkerson has been at Warsaw. Vanator said he hopes the athletic director position will be opened up to candidates outside of the school corporation.

Haworth responded that the job position will be opened up and will be posted not only on Warsaw Schools' Web site but also the Department of Education Web site. The advertising for the position will be posted beginning today, according to Haworth.

With the position being posted this early, Haworth said it gives them time to search for a replacement for Fulkerson and have one in place by the end of this school year.

Fulkerson started at Warsaw during the 1982-83 school year. During his tenure Warsaw Community High School sports team won numerous titles.

Among the titles, in 1991, the Lady Tiger basketball team was state runner-up, and again in 2004 in Class 4A.

The boys basketball team won sectionals in 1983-'86, '89-'94, '96-'97, 2000 and 2006. The team won regionals in 1984-85, 1992-'93, 1996 and 2000. In 1984, 1992 and 1996, the team won semi-state titles, and won the state title in 1984.

Girls softball team won the state title in 1991, and the boys golf team won state in 2005.
