Large gifts to Warsaw Schools were accepted by the school board Monday night.

Menards and an anonymous donor each donated $25,000 to the Harrison Elementary School Community Fitness Trail.

Harrison Principal Randy Polston said the trail has been in the works for a number of years. The dream is to have a mile fitness trail out there, not only for the school, but also for the community.

After the city of Warsaw approved for Menards to build a store along Husky Trail and Patterson Road, Polston said Menards then stepped up and donated a $25,000 matching grant. An anonymous donor then provided the matching funds.[[In-content Ad]]The trail will be on Harrison's property, behind the building.

The school board also accepted a $35,000 grant from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. The money will be used for a computer lab in the Warsaw Area Career Center for freshmen to research possible careers.

Warsaw Community High School teacher Sandy Carmichael wrote the grant.

"If we didn't have Sandy," said Bill Kovach, WACC director, "we wouldn't have this grant."

Kovach also recognized Clive Scott from Zimmer and Mary Marty from Ivy Tech for partnering with WCHS.

Another gift from another anonymous donor was accepted by the school board. The gift was a donation to the boys and girls golf teams.

School Board President Ron Yeiter said the donations were perfect examples of how the community supports the Warsaw School System.

Edgewood Middle School has a state championship team, Principal JoElla Smyth informed the school board.

The EMS Mathematics Team placed first in the Indiana Junior Achievement Super Bowl. Team members are Grace Bagshaw, Brock Davis, Daniel Hamman, Ajay Panicker and Emily Umbaugh.

n Approved a transfer of $272,817 from debt service fund to the pension debt fund.

Kevin Scott, Warsaw chief financial officer, said due to the delayed tax billings in Kosciusko County, Warsaw Schools does not expect to receive property tax monies until August. However, debt service and pension debt payments are due June 30. The school corporation has insufficient cash balance to make the $272,817 pension debt payment, but does have sufficient cash balance in the debt service fund to pay the debt service payment and the pension debt payment.

The transfer will allow the pension debt payment to be covered without external borrowing. Repayment of the temporary transfer will be made no later than Dec. 31.
