Warsaw School Board Continues Search For New Superintendent

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

To help find the next superintendent of Warsaw Community Schools, the school board announced Monday night that it has contracted with BWP & Associates.
BWP & Associates is an “expert in superintendent searches,” according to Board President Jennifer Tandy. The cost of the contract is $6,000 plus expenses for the leadership profile audit and interviews for internal search. If and when the board does a national search, the expense would be an additional $10,000.
She said the board has been working to put criteria together and developing a plan for “our next leader.”
At a special board meeting Feb. 5, Hintz announced his retirement effective June 30. He was approved as superintendent April 27, 2009.
“As the board looks forward, we’re going to need a leader to continue to focus on our mission. To achieve this mission for all, we must work in partnership with our teachers, families and community, and the public, to provide the skills and course of study for our students to be college and career ready in today’s world,” Tandy stated.
Looking at all those items, she said the school board has begun the process to select the next WCS leader.
“Hiring of the superintendent we consider the top priority and primary responsibility of the board. To optimize our efforts, we are seeking input from all of our stakeholders, including teachers, staff, parents, business owners and community residents,” she said.
In consultation with BWP & Associates, the board has established a tentative timeline to accomplish the search. Tandy said BWP will be “seeking and interviewing only highly qualified applicants for the position. While gathering community input, the position will be advertised internally and interested candidates will be verified by BWP.”
She said the board will spend the next few weeks gathering input from the community to create the leadership profile of the next superintendent. The board will provide opportunities for community forums, a survey online as well as targeted focus groups. Information in a press release from the board indicated the survey would be at www.surveymonkey.com/s/SFHV9Y5
“The board wants to know the three or four most important qualities that the next superintendent must possess to lead our school corporation into the future,” she said.
Tandy promised the board will share information with the community on a regular basis at board meetings and on the school corporation website. There will be a link titled  “Superintendent Search” on the website with the most up-to-date information.
“The Board of School Trustees remains very optimistic and excited about the future of Warsaw Community Schools. We hope you will join us in the next few weeks to help determine the best leader to move us forward,” Tandy stated.
She reiterated the board wants the community’s input on the next superintendent. If anyone from the community can not attend the community forums or focus groups, she strongly suggested they go online and answer the survey.
“We will continue to update the community as we move through this process,” she stated.
Tandy said the school board also wanted to publicly acknowledge an appreciation for Superintendent Dr. Craig Hintz for his work to WCS over the past five years.
She listed a few of the many achievements WCS made under Hintz’s leadership.
“We have a very transformational strategic plan ... that has been our guide, our framework for making decisions and ensuring all students achieve our mission,” Tandy stated.
WCS received an “A” rating from the Indiana Department of Education for the past two consecutive years, she said, and more Warsaw students are graduating.
“We have become a Professional Learning Community where all the staff members are trained and learning and collaborating on achieving higher standards and using data to inform and improve all of our results,” Tandy continued.
Student enrollment has increased. Students and parents have more choices, including world languages, orchestra and an emphasis on science, math, engineering and technology. “This curriculum remains very strong,” she said.
Tandy mentioned that strong relationships have been forged with the community to provide quality educational opportunities for all students.
“Also, a very strong thank you to Dr. Hintz and (Chief Financial Officer) Kevin Scott because our system, our finances remain fiscally conservative, balanced and strong. So thank you for that leadership,” she said.[[In-content Ad]]
