SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊWhen the Whitko and Warsaw girls basketball teams met in South Whitley Tuesday night, the 12-5 Tigers were favorites over the 4-11 Wildcats. Warsaw did defeat Whitko 85-65, but the surprising part of the game was the reaction of the coaches after the game.

Although the Tigers won by 20 points, coach Will Wienhorst saw many problems with his team's performance.

"We won but 20 points, but we did not play well as a team," said Wienhorst. "We did not come out well. We could not get the ball where we wanted to go. But I give Whitko a lot of credit, they came to play."

Conversely, the Wildcats lost by 20 points, but coach Mike Sands was pleased with his team's performance.

"We played much better than we did Saturday night," said Sands. "Saturday night we were pathetic. We came back last night, practiced and worked on changing our attitudes and become more positive. Overall, we did a great job."

Whitko jumped out to the early lead when Monica Sands scored the first basket of the game. After Amie Poling hit a free throw and then a basket to give Warsaw its first lead of the game, 3-2.

The Wildcats and Tigers traded baskets again to make the score 5-4 in Warsaw's favor with 5:26 to play in the first frame. Warsaw then went on a 12-6 run to end the quarter with a 16-10 advantage.

"At the end of the first quarter our second unit came in and played very well," said Wienhorst. "That second unit played very well as a team."

However, Whitko refused to let Warsaw off that easily. Sands hit the first basket of the second quarter to cut Warsaw's lead to four, 16-12.

A trey by Jaclyn Leininger made Warsaw's lead 19-12, but Sands, Angela Trump and Stacie Warner combined for a 8-0 Whitko run to give the Wildcats their first lead of the game since the 5:41 mark of the first stanza, 20-19.

The teams traded leads twice more before Warsaw started a 24-8 run to end the quarter with a 15-point lead, 45-30.

Whitko and Warsaw traded baskets for the first few minutes of the third quarter, but at the 3:43 point, the Tigers had a 20-point advantage, 57-37.

Whitko fought back again in the waning minutes of the third quarter and reduced Warsaw's lead to 15, 66-51.

However, Warsaw restored its 20-point advantage through the fourth quarter and finished the game with the 85-65 win.

Three Whitko starters finished the night in double figures. Whitko's Angela Trump led all scorers with 25 points, while Sands added 18 and Teri Walter had 13.

"Angela Trump, she's my hyper player," said Sands. "She usually gets stuck with guarding the leading scorer because she does not run out of energy. Angela really stepped up tonight, and she really hustled for us."

Four Warsaw starters finished the game in double figures. Hilary O'Connell led Warsaw with 24 points, while Michelle DeGeeter added 13 for the Tigers. Kara Kesler and Amie Poling added 12 points each for Warsaw.

Warsaw travels to NorthWood for a Northern Lakes Conference matchup Saturday, while Whitko hosts Oak Hill in a Three Rivers Conference game Saturday as well.
