Warsaw Rotary Collects $50K For Salvation Army
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
By Staff Report-
The club met before Christmas and the total was around $40,000, but last-minute efforts by the club and bell ringing resulted in a higher amount.
Bruce Howe and John Hall once again served as the co-chairs for this event.
This is the 48th Annual “Rotary Salvation Army Day.” The first was first held in 1965, with Howe as the chairman who wanted to honor Brigadier Brice Phillipson, a retired Salvation Army officer and Rotarian at that time.
“We collected a little over $700 that first year,” Howe noted during the collection of checks and monies.
“We want to ensure that The Salvation Army can help others not only at Christmas but throughout the year," he concluded.
The Salvation Army and Warsaw Rotary have had a relationship for 92 years in Kosciusko County since 1921. Many Rotarians have served on the advisory board and also participated in its annual “Rotary Toy Day,” which just observed its 86th anniversary.
Howe was presented emeritus status for Rotary Salvation Army Day by John Hall, who noted that he hoped Howe would be there for the 50th anniversary in 2015.
The Salvation Army assisted more than 300 families this year for the holidays as well as providing assistance to others throughout the year.
