The park is east of Nye Youth Cabin along the Center Lake boat ramp.
Park Superintendent Jon Garber said he met Monday with an arborist from Signature Tree Co., Leesburg, who noticed the trees needed to be removed due to rotting.[[In-content Ad]]The Mulberry tree had a hole in the bottom of it and power lines were interfering with the tree, Garber said. The Maple tree had dead limbs and was not leafing out.
"It was important to take down the trees because they have broken limbs that could cause damage or injure someone," Garber said.
He said both of the trees were at least 48 years old, which he said is not very old for a tree.
There were five park department employees who worked with Park Director Larry Plummer to cut down and remove the trees.
"It is important for the safety of park patrons for the trees to come down," Plummer said.
He said there are plans to eventually replace the trees in new locations in the park that avoid power lines.
There are also plans for the park department to remove a tree in Beyer Park, two trees at Pike Lake Park and two trees at Municipal Park that are dead or hollow.
NIPSCO will remove about seven or eight trees in Central Park and three trees in Kiddieland this summer.
Plummer said there is a 69,000-volt power line that runs through Central Park, and plans are to eventually replace the trees avoiding the power line.
He said plans are to use NIPSCO's tree replacement program to replace the trees that are going to be taken down in Central and Kiddieland.
NIPSCO will trim the remaining trees in the parks and Nye Park because the park department does not have a big enough bucket truck to do the work, Plummer said.
