Warsaw Places Second At NLC Tennis Championships

Plymouth finished first with 51 points to the Tigers 47. Concord finised third with 40 points while Wawasee finished seventh with seven points.
The Warriors didn't have anyone advance to the championship round.
Ben Voorhorst won the No. 3 singles championship with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over Concord's Neal Tallman.
Deon Shafer and Jason Ummel continued their winning ways for Warsaw with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Plymouth No. 2 doubles squad to capture the Tigers second championship of the day.
Jason Sells nearly made it three forciing the Pilgrims' Nick Neidlinger to a third-set tiebreak before falling 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4).
The Tigers close out the regular season at Mishawka Marian today at 4:30 p.m. before sectional play begins Thursday at Warsaw.

The Whitko Wildcats won their first share of the TRC title in school history with a 3-2 win over a tough Manchester sqad. Doru Aldea set the tone with a 6-1, 6-1 win over the Squires' Nate Cain. Whitko's No. 2 Brett King needed three sets but was able to upend Bryant Wiley 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1. The Wildcats third win came in No. 3 singles over Brandon Wiley 6-1, 7-6 (5). Whitko shares the TRC crown with Tippecanoe Valley. Whitko, 6-5 overall, travels to Prairie Heights Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Manchester, 10-5 overall and 0-2 in the TRC, hosts Rochester today at 4:30 p.m.

Lakeland Christian traveled to take on the Lakeland High School Lakers Saturday afternoon and dropped their record to 6-6 with a 3-1 loss. Abby Neff scored first her first and second goals for the Lady Lakers in less than one minute, 16 minutes into the first half. Jamie Widman scored on a direct kick to bring the Lady Cougars to within one goal at half time. Abby Neff scored her third goal of the game with less than nine minutes left in the game, to secure the win for the Lady Lakers. LCA travels to Culver Girls Academy tonight.

LCA capitalized on one of several chances when sophomore Joel Franklin assisted classmate Brandon Stewart with two minutes remaining in the contest. Stewart received a lofted ball and volleyed it into the CMA net from 12 yards out. With the loss, Lakeland Christian drops to 3-2 in the NISC, and 5-7-1 overall. CMA won the JV game by the score of 1-0. LCA will host the Panthers of Lakewood Park Christian School (Auburn) Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.

Warsaw finished fifth after defeating Lafayette Jefferson 25-14, 25-18. The Tigers were led on the day by Danielle DeGeeter. DeGeeter led Warsaw in serving points with 18 and assists with 64. Kim Clay led in digs with 42 and Tasia Smith was tops in kills with 18. Kristin Conley was the block leaders for the Tigers with 4.
