Warsaw Picks Up Huge Win Over NorthWood To Remain Undefeated

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By Jen Gibsson, Times-Union Sports Editor-

On a night that most people would call miserable, Warsaw football coach Phil Jensen felt otherwise.

"What a great night," he said. "What a night. Wow."

And Jensen had reason to be excited. For the first time since 1973, the Warsaw Tigers defeated the NorthWood Panthers at Fisher Field. The 22-16 win also marked the first time the Tigers have ever defeated the Panthers in back-to-back seasons.

However, that does not mean the game was an easy win.

After a scoreless first quarter, NorthWood struck first blood in the second frame. With just 3:01 remaining in the first half, quarterback Jordan Adams connected with Dustin Croy for an 8-yard touchdown pass. The kick after the touchdown sailed wide left, and the Panthers held a 6-0 lead.

But not for long.

After the kickoff, the Tigers took possession of the ball on their own 31-yard line. The Tigers broke into NorthWood territory on the first play from scrimmage when Ryan DeGeeter hit Adam Sisson for a 32-yard gain.

The Tigers methodically moved the ball down the field, and Brad Seiss capped off the 69-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with only 49.2 seconds left in the quarter. After Sisson's kick split the uprights, the Tigers held a slim 1-point lead.

In the waning seconds of the first half, Warsaw and NorthWood traded turnovers, but the Tigers took their lead into the lockerroom at the half. The Warsaw squad had to cut the halftime homecoming announcements short or face a 15-yard penalty. The homecoming festivities were still going on when NorthWood and Warsaw returned to the field after halftime. After the original haltime clock ran out, the clock was set to 3:00 for a warm-up period. Had the Tigers not taken the field when that three minutes was up, they would have been penalized 15 yards for delaying the beginning of the second half.

However, the homecoming snag didn't dampen the Tiger spirits.

Warsaw extended its lead in the third quarter when Seiss hit paydirt again at the 5:40 mark. Seiss' 4-yard run was followed by another Sisson kick, and the Tigers went up 14-6.

Then the rest of the quarter belonged to NorthWood.

The Panthers took possession of the ball on the Warsaw 40 after the kickoff, and went to work from there.

NorthWood moved the ball down to the 25-yard line before Adams connected with Hill for a touchdown with 2:16 left in the quarter. On the conversion, Adams tossed a lateral pass to Jesse Fink who then threw the ball to Ben Lehman for two points.

The game sat in a 14-all tie until just 12.9 tick were left on the clock. The Tigers were on their own 13-yard line with a fourth-and-one situation and decided to punt. The kick was blocked by NorthWood's E.J. Yehl, but quick-thinking by Seiss saved a NorthWood touchdown.

Seiss kicked the ball out of the endzone, forcing a two-point safety instead of allowing a NorthWood player to fall on the ball for seven points.

"That was a heads-up play on the part of Brad Seiss," said Jensen. "That is what the kids are coached to do, but that is a play you only practice maybe twice a year because it doesn't usually happen."

The NorthWood squad took a 16-14 lead into the fourth quarter, and that's where the score remained until just four minutes were left in the game.

Again Seiss was the moneyman for the Tigers, capping off a 59-yard drive with a 1-yard trot into the endzone. Then DeGeeter connected with Seiss on the conversion to put the Tigers up 22-16.

NorthWood had one last chance to pull out the win, but the Panthers failed to score and turned the ball over on downs.

Two plays later, the Tigers were celebrating their sixth Northern Lakes Conference win of the season.

"I know this sounds like a cliche, but it's a shame either team had to lose this game," said Jensen. "But there really aren't any losers out there tonight. These teams came out to fight for their community, their school and their parents. I think we should be taking donations and splitting them up between the schools because what the fans got tonight was pure entertainment."

Brad Seiss finished the night with 101 yards rushing on 25 carries. Ryan DeGeeter completed 5 of 13 passes for 132 yards and an interception.

Adams, who came in after starting quarterback Kyle Lehman was injured on the first play of the game, was 9-of-19 passing for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Adam Hochstetler caught three passes for 43 yards, while Scott Hill had two receptions for 37 yards.

The Panthers (5-3, 4-2) plays Plymouth next week. The undefeated Tigers (8-0, 6-0) travel to Dunlap Friday for a game against the only undefeated team left in the NLC, Concord. The Minutemen are 6-0 in NLC play and 7-1 overall.

Wawasee Downs Elkhart Memorial 34-14, Improves To 4-4 On Season

By Terry Skaggs, Times-Union Sports Correspondent

SYRACUSE -Ê"Our kids played well and never panicked," said a smiling coach Joe Rietveld.

His Wawasee football team had just taken care of Elkhart Memorial Friday night by the score of 34-14 at Warrior Field in front of an enthusiastic homecoming crowd.

For the Warriors, it was a very big win as it takes their record to 4-4 on the season with only Goshen remaining on the schedule and standing in the way of the first winning season since 1986.

The key to the Wawasee win seemed to be balance as the Warriors passed for 154 yards and rushed for 223 yards, keeping the Memorial defense confused most of the evening.

The Warriors also showed a blend of youth and maturity as senior quarterback Brent Doty went 7-of-12 passing under the adverse conditions, while freshman Jordan Swain carried the ball 13 times for 110 yards.

The Warriors took the opening kickoff and marched down field 72 yards in 10 plays to take a 6-0 with 8:19 remaining in the first quarter.

The big play of the drive came as the Warriors were facing a fourth down when Doty found fellow senior Bobby Likens with a 24-yard touchdown pass.

The two-point conversion failed.

Unfortunately for Wawasee, the Chargers came right back, starting on their 35-yard line. Thirteen plays later Elkhart Memorial took a 7-6 lead.

After trading punts with Memorial, the Warriors took over on the 48-yard line, and a few plays later Doty found Nate Edgington with a 23-yard pass for another Warrior touchdown. Wawasee again failed on the two-point conversion but took a 12-7 halftime lead.

The second half began much like the first, only this time it was Memorial that took the kickoff and marched 68 yards down the field. David Link took the ball into the endzone from one yard out to give the Chargers a 14-12 lead with just 3:16 remaining in the third quarter.

From that point on, it was all Wawasee.

The Warriors started their next drive on the 15, marched 85 yards and scored on a one-yard keeper by Doty, giving the Warriors an 18-14 lead.

"I was really proud of our kids for hanging in there," explained Rietveld. "Memorial took the second half kickoff and marched right down and scored, just exactly what we didn't want to have happen. Our defense really stepped it up after that, and when you do that good things happen."

Doty scored again with 10:27 remaining in the fourth on a 17-yard run.

Then after the Warriors recovered a Memorial fumble, Wawasee scored once more on a 1-yard plunge by Swain. A 23-yard reception by Swain set up the touchdown that made the score 32-14.

The scoring ended at 5:46 in the fourth when the Warriors took down the Memorial quarterback in his own end zone for a safety, taking the score to the final tally of 34-14.

Swain finished the game with 13 carries for 110 yards.

"That's great," Rietveld said, "It's been a while since a Wawasee runner had a hundred yards. Our offensive line really did a good job tonight."

Next up for the Warriors will be the Goshen Redskins next Friday in Goshen.

"Goshen is a good football team," said Rietveld. "If you look at common opponents then all indications are that this will be a very close game."
