FORT WAYNE – With one squad dominating the first half and the other controlling the second, the Warsaw and Fort Wayne Northrop girls soccer teams ended Monday’s game in a 1-1 draw.
“They definitely dominated us in the first half,” Northrop coach Jay Glogowski said. “There’s no doubt about it. They did get a quick goal in the second half, but my team countered back and took control.”
After outshooting Northrop 10-2 in the first half, Warsaw got on the board when freshman Elizabeth Van Wormer turned a pass from senior Erica Gauger into a score with 31:53 remaining in the game.
“It was a great play, as Erica kind of laid it off to her,” Warsaw coach Dan Miller said about Van Wormer’s goal. “She beat a defender and put up in.”
Northrop knotted things up with 18 minutes remaining when senior Sophie Long scored an unassisted goal.
Despite being able to tie the game, Glogowski felt as if his team left some more goals out there, outshooting Warsaw 8-4 in the second half and seeing numerous crosses left rolling in front of the Warsaw net.
“We’ve been working in practice the past week on coming in from the outside and crossing it in,” he said. “The girls just have to get hungry and be able to put it away.”
Warsaw also struggled to get the ball into good scoring chances, as only three of its 14 shots were on goal.
“It seemed like we settled a lot,” Miller said. “(Northrop) does a good job of getting numbers behind the ball. They really dropped a lot of people back. It made it difficult to connect with our forwards. We need to get better at playing to feet.”
Warsaw did have a great chance to regain the lead with just under seven minutes remaining.
After sitting out three games because of a re-aggravation to a knee that kept her out of play last season, Warsaw senior Meredith Hollar has been getting minutes on the field the past two games.
Although not at 100 percent, Hollar had a chance against Northrop, as she took a deep pass and was able to get past a Northrop defender.
However, as she found herself in a one-on-one with Northrop senior goalkeeper Gabrielle Rosheck, Hollar’s shot went wide of the goal.
“She had one good chance, where you saw a flash of what she’s capable of when she beat a defender and had a shot at the goal,” Miller said about Hollar. “I thought that was going to be storybook for a second. It’s coming. She’s working back.”
She’ll get more work on that knee Thursday when Warsaw hosts Columbia City at 7 p.m.
