Warsaw Netters Try To Snap Goshen Streak
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Warsaw's tennis team will play Goshen today in the Elkhart Central Regional; the only question is where.
If it doesn't rain, Goshen and Warsaw will meet in the first round of the regional at Northridge High School at 4:30 p.m. today.
If it does rain, Goshen and Warsaw will play at the Elkhart Athletic Club, at county roads 13 and 106, at 4 p.m. today.
Goshen is chasing its eighth straight regional title. A year ago the Redskins, who had lost to the Tigers during the regular-season dual match and at the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament, beat the Tigers 3-2 in the regional championship match.
This year the Tigers hope the opposite happens. They lost to Goshen 3-2 in the dual match then took second to Goshen at the NLC Tournament.
Warsaw tennis coach Andy Lewis is optimistic the opposite will happen.
When Goshen won the dual match, the Redskins beat the Tigers at two and three singles and one doubles.
Only three days after the dual match, Warsaw and Goshen competed in the NLC Tournament.
Even though Goshen won the NLC Tournament with 48 points to Warsaw's 43, the Tigers went 3-0 in head-to-head matches against Goshen. The Tigers won at one and three singles and two doubles.
In a perfect world, Lewis hopes it works this way: Warsaw wins one singles and two doubles. That leaves the Tigers needing to find just one win out of the other three spots in the lineup.
Lewis may hope for this, but that doesn't mean it will happen. To win one singles means Ryan VanPuffelen will have to beat Chris Manhart for the fourth time in a row.
And all Lewis has to do is look back at last year, when he drove home a devastated group of Tigers.
"On paper, last year we looked like the favorite, and we lost," Lewis said. "On paper, this year we look like the favorite. Let's see if we can't get it done this year."
