Elliott, a 1990 graduate of Warsaw Community High School and a standout basketball player for both the Tigers and Grace College Lancers before embarking on a pro career in Australia, has set the unofficial world record for most three-pointers made in a minute.
The previous record for three-pointers made in a minute – shot behind a line 19 feet, 9 inches from the basket like in high school games – was believed to be 29.
The 41-year-old Elliott, who began practicing Friday and set the record Sunday on the court at his home on Winona Lake, is shown in a YouTube video making 32 three-pointers in a minute.
In the video – which can be found by typing “most 3 pointers made in one minute - unofficial world record” into the YouTube.com search bar – Elliott misses his first shot attempt, but then makes 32 of his next 35 shots.

“It all came about because I saw a thing on ESPN about 10 days ago where a kid made 132 three-pointers in five minutes,” Elliott said in a phone conversation. “My kids asked if I could do that. And I thought I could. I have a quick-release shot.”
Elliott, however, said he hadn’t really shot baskets in about a year. And so after some research and a couple days of practice, he started with the record for most in a minute.
“I hadn’t shot in about a year,” said Elliott, whose pro career ended in 1998. “I’ve only played basketball twice since I retired from the pros in Australia. Funny thing though, the last time I shot, last November I was at my kid’s practice and I started shooting free throws on a side-court....I made 116 in a row.”
In the video, the 6-foot-6 Elliott, who wore No. 33 during his playing days, looked like another sharp-shooter who grew up shooting hoops in Indiana – Larry Bird.
Elliott said he believes he could make more than 32 in a minute.
He was wearing Crocs® while shooting, and was shooting outdoors into the sun and with a breeze. He used just three basketballs and had two of his kids rebounding for him.
The previous record-holder had two full racks of basketballs and had eight people rebounding.
“I was making them at an 80-percent clip,” laughed Elliott. “But I was wide open, I didn’t have anybody guarding me, and I was on my home court. It’s like riding a bike. It came back to me pretty quick.”
Elliott said he would like to break the record for three-pointers in five minutes.
First, he said, he would have to train and build some stamina.
This week, Elliott made 84 three-pointers in three minutes.
Elliott scored 890 points in his prep career for Al Rhodes and the Warsaw Tigers, averaging 25 points per game as a senior.
For Jim Kessler and the Grace College Lancers, Elliott was a member of the 1992 NAIA Divisio II national championship team.
He is fourth on Grace’s all-time men’s basketball scoring list with 2,332 points.[[In-content Ad]]
