Both coaches are familiar faces to WCHS athletics.
Tad Nieter has been named the varsity girls golf coach, while Frank Courtois is the new varsity boys soccer coach.
“The best part about it is I get to coach at the school I graduated from and played at,” said Nieter, a 2007 WCHS grad and member of the Tigers’ 2005 boys golf state championship team. “It’s a very unique opportunity. Not everybody gets to coach at the school they went to and in the community they grew up in. I’m very excited about that opportunity.”
Nieter, a third grade teacher at Washington STEM Academy, said among his priorities is getting girls interested in golf. Last season’s team, coached by interim head coach Ray Davis, had just six players.
“One of the biggest things I want to do is build a feeder program,” said Nieter. “I want to get the elementary girls interested and expose them to golf ... even if it’s just getting a club in their hands. I remember the first time my dad handed me a club, I fell in love with it. I want to get them hooked and expose them to a game that I love so much.”
In a phone interview this morning, WCHS Athletic Director Dave Anson was thankful for what Davis did with the Lady Tigers last season, and said he believes the program will thrive under Nieter.
“First of all, I appreciate Ray stepping in and coaching the girls last season,” said Anson. “Ray has been around coaching for many, many years, and we really appreciate him. He’s true to WCHS.
“The program will be in good hands with Tad Nieter,” continued Anson. “He’s experienced in golf and has a love for the game and a love for teaching the game.”
The Lady Tigers were 15-3 this fall with Davis as the interim coach.
Courtois, who has also served as the WCHS girls soccer head coach, takes over for longtime coach Scott Bauer.
Bauer led the Tigers to a string of six consecutive regional championships, a streak that ended this fall.
Included in that streak was a state runner-up finish in 2012.
Bauer, however, took what Anson called at the time “a leave of absence” late in the season this year, and Courtois took over and coached the team to close out the regular season and the sectional.
Now the program is in Courtois’ hands completely.
“Frank has been loyal to the program for a number of years,” said Anson. “He’s been through a lot of good times, as well as some tough times. We look forward to him putting his stamp on the program.”[[In-content Ad]]
