After allegedly hitting his wife in the head with a hammer Friday night, a Warsaw man was jailed on charges of battery and criminal recklessness.

Jackie Lawson Bays, 53, of 410 N. Parker St., Warsaw, was taken into custody at Kosciusko Community Hospital and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail. He is being held without bond.

Julie Elaine Bays, 45, of 724 E. Clark St. #3, Warsaw, was treated at KCH for her injuries and later released. According to a Warsaw Police Department report, she suffered three large lacerations to her head from the hammer blows, as well as several small cuts to her body, a large bruise to the back of her neck, several small bruises to her legs and arms and red marks to the front of her neck.

Police said Jackie Bays admitted striking Julie Bays with the hammer and was taken into custody without incident.

Julie Bays told police that she was talking with her husband at his house when he reportedly pushed her against the kitchen sink, then began choking her. She said that she went to the floor when he began hitting her with his fists and, while on the ground, he allegedly hit her in the head with the hammer three or four times. She said she crawled under the kitchen table and he reportedly began kicking her.

When she was able to get away from him, Julie told police, he looked at her and said, "What have I done?" She then told him to call 911 or take her to the hospital. He drove her to KCH, but became mad again and reportedly punched out the window of the vehicle.

Police found blood at Jackie Bays' home, as well as in the vehicle. Some of Julie Bays' hair was found on the ramp to the KCH emergency room.

The incident remains under investigation. [[In-content Ad]]
