Warsaw Man Injured As Burglars Escape
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
A Warsaw man was injured when he found several men breaking into the Dollar General Store on Market Street, Warsaw, Sunday night.
Police were called to a burglary at the Dollar General Store at 7:08 p.m. Sunday. The suspects apparently ran their car through the gates as they were driving away and struck a man who was checking the building.
Jimmie Thomas told police that he and his wife, Loretta, were checking the business after it closed when he saw a vehicle behind the building.
He said two men were inside and another was standing outside the vehicle. When he saw them, Thomas said, he yelled "freeze" and told them they weren't leaving until police arrived.
Thomas said that he tried to close the gate behind the building to lock the suspects inside, but their vehicle rammed through the gate, hitting Thomas as they went through.
Thomas, 62, was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital and treated for head, chest and back injuries as well as broken ribs and possibly a broken arm. He was later released.
Loretta is the manager of the store and told police she stopped by the building to make sure it was properly closed at 5:30 p.m. She said she was walking through the store when she saw a rear door open and close. She told Jimmie to go to the back of the building and see who was leaving.
He then apparently encountered the burglars, who were leaving the building.
Police said that a desk and safe were ransacked. An undisclosed amount of cash was reported stolen from the cash registers.
Police are searching for the three suspects involved in the incident.
They were described as white males. Thomas told police one man was 6 feet tall, 200-225 pounds, with dark-colored hair, wearing a white shirt and blue jeans. The vehicle was described as an older dark mid-sized station wagon.
Anyone with information on the suspects or the vehicle should call the Warsaw Police Department. [[In-content Ad]]
