Combined Community Services has been seeing record-breaking numbers of families seeking food assistance because of the economy.

Warsaw Community Public Library is once again coming to their aid with its second annual CCS Food Drive.

The food drive will be June 19-27 during the library's Summer Reading Program.

Patrons can bring in kid-friendly, non-perishable items. A box for donated items will be available in the lower level lobby.[[In-content Ad]]Collection times will be Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A food list will be available at the circulation desk.

Child-friendly food items needed include: peanut butter and jelly, canned pastas, pop tarts, pancake syrup and pancake mix, cereal and healthy snacks.

Patrons who bring in three canned food items Friday will receive three free books during the library's annual book sale. The book sale is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ann Zydek, Warsaw Community Pubic Library director, said she is excited for the library to again hold the food drive.

"I think it is critical in these economic times that we look beyond ourselves and donate food to those in need," Zydek said.

She said the library saw how the food donated by the community last summer assisted families and wanted to continue to serve the community.

The food drive was started by Tye Lisenbee, the brother of Peggi Lisenbee-Wright, CCS executive director.

Tye died in June 2008, and Lisenbee-Wright said he started the food drive because he hated to see children go hungry.

She said the food collected during last year's food drive served 400 families.

"We're blessed to live in a community that is so giving and steps up when donations are needed," Lisenbee-Wright said.
