In a Northern Lakes Conference girls soccer game that looked to be destined for a 0-0 finish, Warsaw freshman Caitlin Johnson gave her team the 1-0 win with a goal at the 15:40 mark in the second half Thursday at the City-County Athletic Complex.[[In-content Ad]]"Freshman Caitlin Johnson did a great job of putting herself in a good position, and really taking a great shot," Warsaw coach Dan Miller said of Johnson's shot, which came off a cross pass from senior Amanda Schroeder.
The home win was Warsaw's first NLC win of the year, improving the Tigers to 2-1-1 overall, 1-1-0 in the NLC. The loss leaves NorthWood with a 2-3-1 record, 0-1-1 in the NLC.
"I give all the credit in the world to Warsaw," NorthWood coach Phillip Ummel said. "They were the better team on the field tonight. There's no question about that. We just didn't show up in the first half. It didn't show up on the scoreboard, and we were fortunate to have it at 0-0. We gave a little better effort in the second half."
Through the first half, Warsaw clearly controlled the game with seven shots on goal to NorthWood's two. Regardless of the lopsided offensive advantage, Warsaw just couldn't capitalize with scores.
"It was a game where we controlled and dictated the play almost the whole time," Miller said. "We were creating a lot of good scoring opportunities, we just couldn't finish. Their goalkeeper played pretty well. She made some great saves."
NorthWood senior goalkeeper Ashley Treuchet finished the contest with 11 saves, one of which came at the 10:38 mark in the first half, when she had to jump as high as she could to deny a goal by Warsaw senior midfielder Jocelyn Evans.
"She did an excellent job tonight," Miller said of his girl in the goal. "Ashley Treuchet is a very good goalkeeper. She stepped up and played well tonight. In fact, I thought our whole backline played very well tonight."
Evans also had another great chance at a score earlier in the game, but her shot at the 30:28 mark in the opening half went high, bouncing off the crossbar.
Even with the missed opportunities, Warsaw still picked up a win against a Panthers squad that returns nine players from the team that knocked the Tigers out of last season's postseason.
"We're still trying to work together," Miller said of his young team, which starts two freshmen in Olivia Coon and Emily Williamson. "We're still trying to find our chemistry, but we're getting better with each and every game. By far, this is the best defensive effort we've gotten. By far, this is the best our midfield has played. The forwards are still getting there, but in terms of how we played, just passing and moving the ball, this is one of the best games all season."
The Tigers do have a lot of new faces this season, but do return some stability with senior captains Evans and Bekah Kolbe.
"They've done a great job," Miller said of his two captains. "All the seniors have done an incredible job. Jocelyn is a type of player who's work ethic on the field is nonstop, and she's all over the place," he added. "Bekah, she's our team voice, team leader. All the girls look up to her, and she does a great job of having a great attitude. She just stays calm in the games and is just a good presence for us out there."
While Kolbe's been a good presence, there are some Tigers whose presence may not be felt again this season.
Junior Rachel Ward, a transfer from Wawasee High School, is already out for the year with an ACL tear. Miller is optimistic that the verdict won't be the same for starting goalkeeper, sophomore Diana Monroy, who was also on the sidelines for the NorthWood game, wearing a knee brace.
"We're hoping to getting Diana back in maybe a week or two," Miller said. "We don't know. She's getting an MRI on Friday, so we'll see how that goes."
With Monroy out, senior Caitlin Perrone filled in Thursday, posting four saves.
"Caitlin is a senior, so you expect seniors to step in," Miller said. "She didn't have a whole lot to do tonight, but when she was asked to make a save, she did it."
Warsaw is at home again Saturday, hosting the Manchester Squires at 10 a.m.
