SYRACUSE -ÊEven though Warsaw started school Tuesday, the girls golf team found the time to travel to Maxwelton Golf Course in Syracuse to face off against Northern Lakes Conference opponents Wawasee and NorthWood.

And while Warsaw's girls tend to have trouble with the tricky Maxwelton, the Tigers finished the evening with a 188. Wawasee was close behind with a 195, and NorthWood rounded out the trio with a 236.

"Today was a bit different for us," said Warsaw coach Bob Turner. "We're not used to playing after school. This was our first day of school, and the kids' minds were elsewhere. They were excited about getting back and seeing all their friends.

"And we never play well at this course. It's tough."

But don't get Turner wrong. He's anything but disappointed in his team.

"It's very difficult to criticize a team that's 9-0," Turner said. "We have five or six solid players. Our strength is not in one individual person, but in the entire team. We are concerned with the Warsaw High School team. And that shows in the success we've had."

Not to be outdone, Wawasee shot their best round of the season, a 195, on their home course.

"I am very pleased," said Wawasee coach Scott DeHart. "This is the best round we shot this year. In fact, this is the best round we've had on this course in three years.

"We knew we had to have a 200 or better if we wanted to compete with Warsaw. We came in five strokes under that mark, but Warsaw was just the better team tonight. I'm very proud of the girls."

Wawasee's Carrie Alles and Warsaw's Abby Schori were the medalists of the match, shooting 43s for the night. Warsaw's Erin Elliott was next with a 44while Wawasee's Ashley Bell shot a 49.

"Carrie Alles had an excellent round with a 43," said DeHart.

Rebecca Stoelting (50), Kayla Auer (53) and Aimee Niles (53) rounded out the varsity scoring for Wawasee.

Katie Manning (50), Katrina Bonahoom (51) and Dayna Ridderman (53) finished out the varsity scoring for Warsaw.

"We lost three good golfers from last year's team," said Turner. "So we basically had to start over. These girls are giving everything they have, and I am very proud of them."

April Flickinger led NorthWood with a 50, while teammate Brandi Lengacher had a 51. Katie Hartman (61), Bobbi Anglemyer (69) and LeeAnn Parson (72) were NorthWood's varsity competitors.

Warsaw, 9-0 overall and 2-0 NLC, hits the links again tonight against Plymouth and Oak Hill in Converse, while Wawasee, 6-7 overall and 1-1 NLC, plays Concord at Black Squirrel Wednesday.
