Warsaw Has No Problems With Goshen
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
A few years ago, Sheryl Crow had a hit with the song "A Change Will Do You Good."
Maybe Warsaw girls basketball coach Will Wienhorst listened to that song this week as he prepared the Tigers for the game with Goshen Saturday.
The Tigers changed defenses almost every time they headed down the court. And that change did the Tigers good as Warsaw (9-5, 3-1 NLC) kept the Goshen (3-12, 0-5 NLC) offense off balance and downed the Redskins 83-35.
After the Tigers got the ball off the tip and scored to begin the game, the Tiger defense went to work. Goshen got the ball past the half-court mark once in its first three possessions, but each time Warsaw stole it back and capitalized for the score.
"We switched defenses every time we went down the floor," said Wienhorst. "When our guards scored, we used one defense. When our forwards scored, we used a different defense. And then when our center scored, we used yet another defense. We used that to disrupt Goshen's offense and keep them off balance."
The Tigers took a 6-0 lead before Goshen scored its first basket with 6:28 left on the first-quarter clock. Then the Tigers went on a 16-2 run to build a 22-4 lead with just over two minutes to play. By the end of the first quarter, Warsaw held a 16-point lead, 24-8.
The Tigers continued to pummel the Redskins through the second quarter, and at the half Warsaw held a 43-14 advantage.
In the first half, Goshen turned the ball over 20 times and committed 13 fouls, while Warsaw had just eight turnovers and nine fouls.
After Goshen's Mollie Kercher scored the first basket of the second half with 7:47 left in the third frame, Warsaw went to work again. Hilary O'Connell and Janna Knisely scored the next eight points to increase Warsaw's lead to 53-16.
Warsaw continued to pour it on through the rest of the quarter and held a 65-21 advantage going into the final frame.
After Knisely hit two free throws and Kara Kesler hit a basket to start the fourth stanza, Jenny Stults hit two free throws for Goshen. Then Jaclyn Leininger and Michelle DeGeeter each scored two to give the Tigers a 50-point lead with nearly five minutes left in the last quarter of play.
"We played intense for 32 minutes," said Wienhorst. "I thought we turned the ball over too many times, especially in the fourth quarter. We had a lot of unforced turnovers and we also missed a lot of easy shots, lay-ups. We played good, solid defense and we were up 50 points quite early."
Every Tiger who played in the game scored, but Hilary O'Connell led the Warsaw squad with 18 points. She also had six steals. Janna Knisely added 15 points fof Warsaw.
Goshen outscored Warsaw 11-7 in the last 3:21 of the game to make the final score 83-35.
Warsaw is in action at Concord Saturday for another Northern Lakes Conference matchup.
