Following Warsaw’s 49-48 home loss to Homestead Friday, senior Jordan Stookey and junior Rashaan Jackson, as well as junior reserves Peyton Long and Camerson Hoskins, were cited for violating the team’s curfew, resulting in a suspension for the first half of Saturday’s game.
The Tigers (2-2) still built a 20-13 halftime lead, ultimately going to on to defeat the Vikings (3-1) by a 50-46 count.
“The group we played in the first half did a very nice job,” Warsaw coach Doug Ogle said. “Led by (senior) Nate Pearl, (sophomore) Paul Marandet and (junior) Jake Mangas. They were very steady. I was happy to be up seven at halftime after playing the first half without four guys.
“Not only was it nice for the guys who stepped up, but also for the guys who were suspended,” he added. “It was a growing time for all of them.”
In the opening half, Mangas was the driving force for the Tigers, scoring nine points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field, while Huntington North struggled, making just 5 of 14 field goals and scoring 13 points.
“It’s kind of hard for a team to show up and find out the other team isn’t playing its normal group,” Ogle said. “It’s not what you’re expecting. It’s kind of hard to not let down. I felt like Huntington could play better than it did in the first half.”
Huntington North did play better in the second half, using a 9-0 run in the third quarter to trim a 29-16 Warsaw lead to 29-25 with 2:51 remaining in the third quarter.
However, at the end of that run, Vikings senior Matt Hogan injured his knee, which assistant coach Marcus Moore said would require a hospital visit after the team left the high school.
“He’s kind of our engine, he makes us go,” Moore said of Hogan, who had five points, four steals and two assists. “It’s one of those things where you just hope he’s alright. The biggest thing we can take out of it losing a guy like that is learning how to play without some of your horses. For a little while there, we were looking around like, ‘Where’s Matt at? Where’s Matt at?’ I think that got our guys off guard a little bit.”
With Hogan out, Pearl pushed Warsaw’s lead back to 31-25 following a bucket, then a pair of Jackson free throws increased the lead to eight.
The Vikings had another push in the fourth quarter, and senior Keenan Leichty moved the Vikings within 43-41 with 1:20 remaining.
From there, it was all about Warsaw making free throws, which it did thanks to Pearl.
Going into the final minute, Warsaw had converted 10 of 18 free throws, but Pearl converted 7 of 8 down the stretch, preserving the lead.
“That’s just a really good win for our psyche and a really good team win,” Ogle said. “I appreciated all of our guys’ efforts in different ways.”
Pearl finished the win with a team-high 12 points, followed by 11 each from Mangas and Jackson, while Stookey posted eight.
Huntington North senior Kyle Platt led all scorers with 17, with junior teammate Caleb Landrum netting 15.
“A lot of credit to Warsaw,” Moore, who was filling in for head coach Rob Irwin at the press conference, said. “They seemed to get a lot of those 50/50 balls. We were trying to go on a run, and we started to get more stops, started to get some baskets on the offensive end. We just couldn’t put it together on consecutive possessions.”
Evening his team’s season record at 2-2, Ogle was very pleased with how his team performed.
“They had been on a roll,” he said about Huntington North. “They bombed Homestead by 16 in their first game, then in their next two games (against Mississinewa and Southwood), they won by (20 and 33 points, respectively). They came in here with a lot of confidence, playing well. We just felt like we could compete. We just had some guys who had to take some medicine, in terms of following rules. So, you’re happy when your other guys, given the opportunity, are ready to go.
“We’re not that far from being 4-0, but we’re not a 4-0 good team,” he added. “It’s pretty just where we are. Where we are is where we should be, in terms of how we play.”
Where Warsaw is next is North Manchester, where it will face another 3-0 team in the Manchester Squires on Thursday night.
The game will be the 61st meeting between the Tigers and Squires, but the first since Manchester hosted and defeated Warsaw 78-68 in 1976.
“It’s a game with some local flavor,” Ogle said. “There should be a decent crowd on a Thursday night. These games for us, when we play the smaller schools in our area, you can look at it like, ‘What do we have to gain by playing a Manchester or a Tippecanoe Valley?’ It’s just more interesting for their fans and our fans – neighboring communities. With Manchester getting better, I think it will be a competitive game. It will be a real competitive game. We’ll need to play well. I just like the fact that it’s close. I’ve never coached in that gym. I’ve been in there several times. I like it. It has some character. Anytime we can get into a gym that has character, I want to try to get there.”
