Warsaw Gymnasts Defeat Warsaw
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
NORTH MANCHESTER - The Warsaw gymnastics team traveled to Manchester and came home with a 90.70-76.20 win, but Amanda Campbell knows there is more to be done before sectionals.
"Overall, we did OK as a team," said Campbell. "We were a little rough out there."
Manchester coach Don Osborne also knows more is left to be done before his girls head for sectional as well.
"We have a young team, but we are improving every meet," said Osborne. "Each meet we get a little stronger and a little better. We'll keep working our way to the sectional and hopefully, we will be in top form then."
Callie Edgington led the Tigers, placing first in the all-around competition and on the uneven bars. Jillian Letsch placed first on the balance beam and floor exercise, but she was not eligible for the all-around competition because she injured her ankle on the vault.
"Jillian was unable to compete on the vault," said Campbell. "She injured her ankle so she didn't compete and wasn't eligible for the all-around.
"Jillian and Callie both did nice jobs on the beam. Mandy Rice is upping her difficulty on the bars, and she is improving as well."
For the Squires, Megan Goshert placed first on the vault and third on the floor exercise to earn second-place honors in the all-around competiton.
"Megan had a nice vault, and overall the girls did what I expected. We had a few stops here and there, but overall I was pleased with our performance," said Osborne.
Tina French, the only other Squire to compete in each event, placed fourth in the all-around competition for Manchester.
"I think being at home helped," said Osborne. "This was our first home meet this year, and I think it helped a lot."
"We had a little trouble on the floor exercises," said Campbell. "We had a bit of trouble on the mat. This was a basic wrestling mat, and we are not used to that. Considering our troubles, we did well in that event."
Letsch, Edgington and Rice placed first, second and fourth respectively on the floor exercise.
