PLYMOUTH - Warsaw's wrestlers nabbed the sectional championship with a great team effort, which included 19 Tiger pins, a tech fall and eight decisions, three of which were major. As a team, Warsaw scored 208.5 points, followed by Rochester with 196.5, Plymouth 190.5, Bremen 172.5, Culver Military 164.5, Wawasee 135.5, Culver Community 131, Triton 76 and Tippecanoe Valley 55.5.

Warsaw coach Tony Boley said, "Every team goes into the sectional feeling like they have an opportunity to win, yet we faced a few obstacles, like losing Tom Lowe to an injury and Derbyshire getting over illness. We also missed several practices and a couple of meets due to the weather, so we were pretty rusty heading into last week's NLC tourney, but even that was a helpful tune-up."

Boley added, "Between the rounds at the sectional we met as a team; and after round one we saw that we were still in the thick of it, but we needed pins."

While Rochester had four champions to Warsaw's three, a stronger showing in consolation competition and the abundance of pins pushed the Tigers past the Zebras. The result of the win is that Warsaw will advance to the team regionals at South Bend Clay Wednesday night, where they will face Penn.

Individual champions for Warsaw were Kent Neilson (112 pounds), Matt Elvidge (130) and Chris (Elvidge 135). All three of these Tigers pinned every single opponent they faced. Nielsen's victims were Kevin Dobbyn of Culver Military (2:54), Zach Troxel of Culver Community (2:24) and in the finals, Rochester's Derek Nelson (4:57). His opponents managed to score only a combined four points and he now boasts a season record of 19-6.

Freshman Matt Elvidge (130) improves to 25-4 with his three pins, all of which were in the second period. He nailed Triton's Matt Woodward in 3:34, then Plymouth senior Matt Simanski in 2:53. In the championship, he dominated Culver Military's Joe Stamper, scoring the fall in 3:35. Chris Elvidge (135), a senior, stuck Bremen's Corey Johnson in 3:10, then Brock Reynolds of Culver Military in 1:19. In the finals, he dispatched Roy Bell of Culver Community in 52 seconds. The elder Elvidge now sports a record of 29-4.

Tigers taking third-place honors included Johnny Mattson (103), who lost only to eventual champion Chase Davis of Wawasee but then proceeded to rack up a 12-0 major decision over Culver Military's Roman Clark. Andy Keener (145) also took third place, moving to the consolation bracket after losing 5-2 to David Read of Plymouth. Then Keener came back with three strong wins, including a couple of tech falls, before sticking Wawasee's Jay Buyer in 1:27.

Bobby Derbyshire (152) lost in the semifinal round but scored a pair of pins (0:42 and 0:41), along with a 5-2 decision to nab his third-place finish. Joel Perry (189) also lost in the semifinals but grabbed a couple of major decisions (11-0 and 12-3), along a 5-3 decision to earn third place. Third place also went to Evan Readle (215), who lost his first match to the eventual champ, Chris Allison of Bremen. Readle battled back in the consolation rounds with a 2-0 decision, a 4:10 fall and finally a 10-5 decision over Harold Lemler of Triton.

Nick Missos (119) took fourth even though he had only one varsity win prior to the sectional. After a loss in earlier rounds Saturday, Missos pinned Tony Landry of Valley. Boley praised Missos, saying, "He was really aggressive and put out fantastic effort, even in his consolation loss."

In that match, Missos faced T.J. Ousnamer of Plymouth, who went out to a 5-0 lead. However, Missos hung in there, scoring a takedown in period two and making several efforts at pinning combinations before finding himself upended and pinned at 2:45. Blake Deaton (160) also took fourth place.

Warsaw will send nine competitors to the individual regional. The top four places advance to the regional, where firsts will take on fourths from different sectionals while thirds will face seconds. Fifth-place finishers stand waiting in the wings as alternates.

Wawasee's champions were Chase Davis (103), and Rob McKibben (189). Davis, a freshman, defeated Warsaw's Johnny Mattson with three takedowns and reversal for an 8-4 victory. In the finals, Davis beat Culver Community's Jesse Good in a 14-6 major decision.

Rob McKibben (189) pounded out three pins en route to his championship: Michael Hooker of Plymouth (2:22), Austin Rausch of Rochester (0:39) and then in the final match, Matt Turpin of Bremen (5:30).

Freshman Braxton Riley (215) was a runner-up, after beginning his wrestling season one week ago. He lost in the finals to Bremen senior Chris Allison, the victim of a pin in 3:23. Earlier, Riley had scored a 2:57 fall and a 14-7 decision to come to his short season record of 4-3.

Third-place honors were garnered by Trent Brown (125), Ryan Beer (160) and Ryan Thornburgh (275). After losing in the semifinals to the champ Garrett James of Rochester, Warrior sophomore Trent Brown came back with a couple of decisions and earned third place. Ryan Beer also lost on the semifinals, but went on to win two matches, concluding with a 17-2 tech fall over Warsaw's Blake Deaton. Ryan Thornburgh was knocked off in the first round, but roared back with three successive falls in less than a minute each (0:30, 0:45 and 0:22) to take third place.

Incidentally, Wawasee's Josh Lozano (NLC champ at 119 pounds) failed to make weight and is out of the running for state competition.

Wawasee's seven regional representatives also include Jay Buyer (145), who finished in fourth place.

Zach Sainer (140) of Tippecanoe Valley reached the finals after pinning Ethan Jessie of Wawasee and beating Plymouth's David Hartman, 9-6. In the finals, he faced state-ranked Cory Fornal of Rochester and was defeated in a 19-2 tech fall. Sainer will be the lone Valley representative at the regional competition.

Triton will send two grapplers to the regional. Chad Ulmer (171) took fourth place after losing in the semi-finals to the eventual champ, Ricky Sumpter of Bremen. Ulmer defeated Warsaw's Dale Wood and Culver Community's Devyn Vantwood before narrowly losing to Culver Military's David Sky, 3-2. Fourth place also went to Harold Lemler (215) after he had been knocked off by runner-up Braxton Riley of Wawasee. However, the Triton sophomore came back to notch a two pins and then lost to Evan Readle of Warsaw.

Wawasee and Warsaw, as well as Triton and Tippecanoe Valley, will send top four finishers to compete Saturday at Mishawaka in the individual regional competition at 9 a.m. Warsaw advances to the regional team championship Wednesday at South Bend Clay, where they will compete against Penn.
