Warsaw Grapplers Lose Tie-Breaker To Concord
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
When Warsaw wrestled Northern Lakes Conference opponent Concord Tuesday, the final score of 33-33 went as a loss for the Tigers after a consideration of criteria.
The Minutemen had more six-point victories, six to Warsaw's five, so they were awarded the team win.
"We were down and we kept coming back," said Warsaw coach Tony Boley. "I was very proud of this effort."
Assistant coach Scott Hutcherson praised the team in a meeting on the mat.
"I saw some great wins," he told the team. "I saw some great pins, and I saw you battling back."
Afterwards he was quick to add, "Of course we would have liked a win, but we wrestled well and we got pins from guys who normally wouldn't get pins."
The Tigers gave up forfeits in three weight-classes, but in actual on-the-mat meetings, the team score was 33-15.
The competition opened at 160 pounds with a forfeit awarded to Concord.
Then Warsaw's lone senior wrestler, Tom Lowe (171), on senior night scored a 16-1 tech fall against Brandon Urednick.
Taylor Julian (189) nearly pulled an upset against 16th-ranked Matt Boyce. Boyce scored an opening-period takedown, but in period two Julian nailed a takedown and took the Concord senior to his back. The Warsaw freshman was unable to finish the fall, however, and wound up suffering a narrow 8-5 loss.
Another match was sacrificed with a forfeit at 215 pounds, and then Hans Sale (275) was pinned by Morgan Smith in 1:40.
Justin Brooks (103) ran up a 13-2 score with three takedowns and a reversal in the first two periods against Ryan Dobbs. Although he strained for a fall, Brooks could only come up with two nearfalls in the third period for the major decision.
The Tigers suffered two losses by freshmen. Steven Palladino (112) was pinned by Justin Clements in 2:33. Then Josh Flannery (119) was handled by Sean Allison, a senior who used a leg-cradle to wrap up the fall in 1:06.
The remaining mat confrontations were won by the Tigers, all by falls, but it wasn't enough to pass the Minutemen.
Jerry Belcher's (125) hard work paid off, as he pinned Sam Martin in 1:42. Nick Missos (130) followed suit, pinning Mike Dines with a quick cradle in a minute.
Matt Elvidge (135) hammered out three takedowns before hammering Brett Baldwin to the mat in 1:42. Adam Keener (140) then scored a couple of takedowns against Jose Pena, including a headlock which ended in a fall at 1:18.
Andy Keener (145) got down low to score a couple of takedowns in the first period. In the second period he scored a quick reversal and spent the remaining time unsuccessfully working on combinations out of a leg ride. In the final period he moved to different strategies and came away with a fall in 4:51.
The forfeit at 152 pounds left the final scored tied at 33-all.
The referee reviewed the scoring and examined criteria in order.
First of all was the matter of which team won the most matches, including forfeits, and that was a tie at seven each.
Next was the consideration of who had the most six-point wins (falls or forfeits), and here the edge went to Concord with six against Warsaw's five, giving the Minutemen the team win.
Next up for both teams is the Northern Lakes Conference tournament Saturday at Concord.
Concord is now 15-8 overall and 4-3 in the NLC, while Warsaw is at 11-9 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
The postseason will get underway Jan. 28 with the sectional at Plymouth.
