The sign above Warsaw's wrestling room reads, "The art of living is more like wrestling than dancing."

If it were a dance, Warsaw's 31-22 Northern Lakes Conference victory over rival Wawasee would have the same magnitude of a senior prom.

The win by Warsaw over Wawasee was the first since 1995.

It had all the trimmings. 1997 Wawasee graduate Darrell Carr, who sat with the Warriors rather than in the stands, would have played the part of the king, returning to crown a new one.

Of course, there was also the joy of finding a parking spot for the latecomers. Not to mention as the 'dance' went on, the teams were sreaming at the top of their lungs and standing to witness what was going on at center stage.

From the get-go both teams were stepping on each other's feet so to speak. Warsaw's Anthony Boley and Wawasee's Matt Coy got the evening started in the 103-pound class, and the Warriors found themselves up early, but only 3-0 as the Tiger freshman took his senior oppenent to the distance in the 14-10 decision.

Adam Harter put the Tigers in front 4-3 after his 11-3 decision over Josh DeGood. At this point in the match, going into the 119-pound contest, Warsaw coach Tony Boley made a strategic move.

"Both (Scott) Snyder and (Adam) Bott weighed in at 119 for us," said Boley. "I made a strategic move and put Bott in there to wrestle Chet Wortinger (state qualifier last year) because Snyder hasn't been able to do much with him over the years, and I knew he could handle his opponent at 125."

Wortinger pinned his freshman opponent in 27 seconds to give the Warriors a 9-4 lead. As Boley had hoped, Snyder was able to come through, and the Tigers were within two points after a 6-2 decision made the count 9-7.

Warsaw won the next two matches to take a 16-9 lead. Wawasee pulled to within four when Nate Goldenberg won a 6-1 decision over Joe Swanson.

The next match, the 145-pound contest, arguably gave the Tigers the momentum they needed. Richard Wolfe pinned Chris Adkins in 3:04 to give Warsaw a 22-12 lead, and they never trailed again. Had Adkins pinned Wolf, the Warriors would have taken a 18-16 lead.

After Tiger senior Matt Zellers won a 7-3 decision over J.J. Davis, the stage was set for the match that those in attendance were gasping about. Kevin A. Carr, who moved from Warsaw to Wawasee in 8th grade, squared off with Isaac Perry. Carr was the state runner-up last year in the 145-pound class.

"Isaac didn't back down," said Boley. "He just kept coming, all of our kids did. I'm real of them."

Most of the Warrior fans in attendance expected Carr to throw Perry around like a rag doll. Perry held his ground and forced Carr to win by decision, and Wawasee could pull to within only 10 at 25-15. A Carr pin would have closed the gap to 25-18.

"In the scheme of things it wouldn't have made that much difference (Carr's pin)," said Wawasee coach Kevin Taylor. "That would have only given us three more points and we lost by nine."

Wawasee won the 171-pound class to make the tally 25-19, but the Warriors were deducted one point for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The Tigers put three more points on the board when Steve Fribley won a 3-2 decision over Craig Jensen.

Warsaw then led 28-18, meaning Wawasee would have to get pins in the last two matches to get the victory. Like it seemed to do all night long, things went Warsaw's way. Steve McKinley beat Tom Bryan in the 215-pound class to put things out of reach for the Warriors.

"McKinley sealed the deal as far as total team points," said Boley. "I told the kids yesterday (Wednesday) that we can do it next year or the year after, but I was tired of waiting."

After the match, McKinley said he was confident he could come through for his team.

"I was doing all the math in my head," said McKinley. "But I wasn't worried. I'm 3-0 against that kid now."

Wawasee's Jamie Salazar won a 13-5 decision over Joey Navarro, though it had no meaning to the team score.

"You just tell him (Salazar) to go get a win," said Taylor. "There's a conference seed on the line."

Warsaw (7-0, 2-0) will wrestle at the Lake Central Invite tommorrow at 9:30 a.m. Wawasee (5-1, 1-1) will be at Goshen Dec. 8 at 6:30 p.m.
