Warsaw Golfers Too Much For Eagles, Vikings

Played under a darkening sky Thursday afternoon, the weather was the only thing that threatened Warsaw's varsity boys golf team.

The third-ranked Tigers hosted Columbia City and Huntington North at Stonehenge Golf Club and had little trouble beating the Eagles and Vikings.

So little challenged were the Tigers that Warsaw's junior varsity team beat both Columbia City's and Huntington North's varsity scores.

Warsaw's varsity team won the three-way match with a four-man team score of 148, while Huntington North shot 169 and Columbia City 179.

The Tiger junior varsity team won its three-way match by shooting 165, followed by Huntington North's 180 and Columbia City's 191.

Both Warsaw's varsity and junior varsity teams are 6-0 on the season.

"We even started early," Warsaw coach Ben Barkey said of the rain holding off until after the match was completed. "It was getting dark. It was kind of hard to see the ball the last couple holes, but the guys are really playing well right now."

The Tigers were led by seniors Jake Brodhead and Chris Hanson and sophomore Tad Nieter.

Brodhead shot 34 on the par-35 front nine at Stonehenge to earn match medalist honors, while Hanson shot 36 and Nieter 38.

"I hit the ball all right," said Brodhead. I just tried not to make any doubles and keep it on the fairways and greens. I didn't really hit any poor shots. I just tried to play consistent all the way through."

Said Barkey, now in his third year as Warsaw's coach, "The guys are playing really well right now. It's unique this year with the competition we have at our fifth spot. We've had really good competition in practice, and that's just going to make us better. Jake had another very solid round tonight, and (Chris) Hanson shoots a 36. That's what we need from those two guys. It's great to see them playing this well."

Nieter started the season playing on the junior varsity team but was recently moved up to the varsity team in the fifth spot.

His nine-hole score of 38 Thursday was the third-best score of the 15 varsity golfers that competed.

"I keep telling him he's got one of the best swings on the team," Barkey said of Nieter. "He hits the ball solid and he's got a short game. He's got a great golf package."

Skyler Scott, who was playing in the fifth spot for the varsity Tigers, played the No. 1 junior varsity spot Thursday and shot 39, which would have been the fourth-best score turned in by any of the 15 varsity golfers that competed.

Joining Brodhead, Hanson and Nieter in the varsity lineup were senior Jon Clevenger and sophomore Grant Slater.

Clevenger shot 40, while Slater finished with a 41.

Chad Kippert led Huntington North with a 38, while Brandon Pike finished with a 40.

Matt Schumaker and Dan Rex shot 40s for Columbia City.

"In our nine-hole matches, we should do really good," said Brodhead. "We're starting to play better. Our first couple matches, we weren't doing as good, but we're playing better now."

Both the Warsaw varsity and junior varsity teams will compete Saturday in Valparaiso.
