Warsaw Golfers Second At NLC Championship

NAPPANEE - The Warsaw Tiger golf team placed second in Saturday's NLC Championship to claim second place overall in the conference.

Twice the Tigers have lost matches to a conference opponent, and both times it was Goshen. Once again for Warsaw, it was just too much Inga Snyder. Snyder, who shot a 34 on the par 36 McCormick Creek Golf Course in late August to help beat Warsaw, came through again on the course. The Goshen star shot a 37 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine for a 76.

Goshen shot a 359, and Warsaw was a distant second with a 407. Tricia Suchecki and Brooke Westover each shot a 99 to lead Warsaw.

Also for the Tigers, Amy Landis shot a 101, Ashley Cooper a 108 and Julie Arnold a 110.

"We played to our average, but Goshen had great scores from all their players," Turner said. "They are a great team, especially their No. 1, Snyder. Our girls had a good NLC season. We went 5-1 to finish second.

"Now we need to focus on the sectional."

Wawasee placed third with a 425. Kari Wortinger shot a 96, Carly Beer a 106, Julia Wolfe a 109, Jennifer Light a 114 and Megan King a 128.

Two Warsaw golfers made the All-Conference team. Suchecki and Westover were two of the eight to make the team. Wortinger was Wawasee's lone representative to make the team. Snyder and three other Goshen players also made the team.

Arnold and Landis were named to the honorable mention list.

Counting the NLC regular season matches and the Saturday's championship match, Goshen finished in first with 14 points. Warsaw was second with 12, while NorthWood was third with 8.5. Wawasee was fourth with 7.5

Warsaw has a 4:30 p.m. Tuesday match at Culver Girls Academy.

Wawasee hosts a 4 p.m. match with Columbia City and Goshen at Maxwelton on Tuesday.

Tigers Go 1-1

The Warsaw Tiger soccer team went 1-1 in its Saturday invitational, played at the CCAC.

Warsaw blasted Greenwood 9-2 in the first game. The Tigers recorded 29 shots on goal compared to just four for Greenwood.

Jon Earhart scored two Warsaw goals, while Bob Lee, Kevin Stouder, Josh Wallen, Jeremiah Wallen, Nate Krogel, Luke Sawyer and Dan Ropte added one each. Seven of the nine were unassisted goals.

Carroll blanked Warsaw 3-0 in the championship game. Carroll had 19 shots on goal compared to five for Warsaw. Warsaw goalkeeper Matt Brown recorded nine saves.

Carroll scored all of its goals in the first half.

"We came out flat and let them get three goals," Warsaw coach Corey Rose said. "Then it was an even ballgame after that. We're happy with our play in the second half, and we had some opportunities. Now we know what to expect in the sectional. They are the team to beat."

Carroll advanced to the championship game by beating Andrean 4-1. Andrean beat Greenwood 8-2 in the consolation game.

Warsaw, 3-3-1, has a 4:30 p.m. game at NorthWood on Tuesday.

Tennis

Warsaw Places Third

The Warsaw tennis team placed third in its Saturday seven-team invitational.

Fort Wayne North Side won with 22 points and was followed by South Bend St. Joe with 17 and Warsaw with 15.

Warsaw's No. 2 doubles team of Owen Compton and Dan Benyousky had the only Warsaw first place. Ryan Van Puffelen, Warsaw's No. 2 singles player, placed second.

Craig Harman, Warsaw's No. 1 singles player, placed fifth, as did Matt Howard, Warsaw's No. 3 singles player. Warsaw's No. 1 doubles team of Dan Tupps and Pete Hake placed sixth.

Warsaw, 4-3, hosts a 4:30 p.m. match with Wawasee on Tuesday.

Volleyball

Triton Places Second

At Bourbon, the Triton volleyball team advanced to the championship match of its invitational before losing to Argos on Saturday.

Triton went 3-0 in its pool beating Culver (15-7, 15-11), South Central (15-1, 15-0) and Bremen (10-15, 15-8, 15-8).

Argos went 3-0 in its pool, setting up the championship match. Argos beat Triton 4-15, 15-12, 15-13 to take first place.

Jena Weissert and Megan Sarber each had eight kills for Triton in the chamipionship match. Holly Hepler had 15 assists, while Heather Barron had 10. Hepler was 17-for-17 serving.

In other matches, Wawasee beat John Glenn 15-9, 7-15, 15-12. Wawasee then lost to Argos (10-15, 16-14, 15-5) and lost to LaVille (15-10, 8-15, 11-15) to finish the day with a 1-2 record.

Argos advanced to the finals by also beating Glenn (15-11, 15-5) and by beating LaVille (15-10, 15-4).

Triton, 10-3, has a 6 p.m. match Elkhart Baptist on Thursday.

Wawasee, 7-6, has a match at 6 this evening at Westview.

Manchester Goes 1-2

At Wabash, the Manchester Squires volleyball team went 1-2 in Saturday's County Tourney.

Manchester lost to Southwood (15-12, 12-15, 14-16), beat Wabash (15-6, 15-4) and lost to Northfield (15-13, 2-15, 6-15).

Jodie Peden led Manchester with eight kills, while Erin Groombridge served six aces. Groombridge also led with 14 assists. Amanda White had 23 service points.

Manchester's junior varsity team went 3-0 to win the County Tourney. The Squires beat Southwood (15-13, 15-6), beat Wabash (15-7, 15-8) and beat Northfield (15-8, 11-15, 16-14). The junnior varsity Squires are 5-3.

Manchester, 4-10, has a 5:30 p.m. match at Canterbury on Tuesday.

JV: Whitko Wins Tourney

At Butler, the Whitko Wildcat junior varsity volleyball team won Saturday's Eastside Invitational.

Whitko hammered Eastside 15-7, 15-5 in the championship match. The Wildcats got there by beating West Noble, Garrett and Fairfield.

Stephanie Warner led Whitko with 11 aces on the day, while Heidi Hull had 14 kills. Tisha Rowland had 20 assists, and Warner had 12 digs.

Cross Country

Warsaw Teams Compete

In Carmel Classic

At Carmel, the Warsaw cross country teams competed in Saturday's Carmel Cross Country Classic.

Carmel won the boys' race with a cumulative time of 81:46. Portage was second and North Central third. Warsaw placed seventh out of 10 teams with a time of 89:07.

Carmel's Tito Downer won the race with a time of 16:01. Warsaw's best time was turned in by Will Woodward, who finished in 17:34. Teammate David Hoffert was right behind him with a time of 17:35. No Tiger cracked the top 25.

Carmel also won the girls' race, finishing with a cumulative time of 75:51. Warsaw placed last out of the 12 teams.

Carmel's Julie Ham won the race with a time of 14:29. Summer Boyd had Warsaw's best time, finishing in 16:11. No Warsaw runner made the top 25.

Warsaw has a 5 p.m. race at Concord on Tuesday.

TV Hosts Invitational

At Mentone, the Tippecanoe Valley Viking cross country team hosted a Saturday invitational.

Northfield won both races. The Northfield boys finished with a score of 29. Triton was sixth, while Whitko was eighth and Valley last.

Northfield's Chad Andrews won the race with a time of 17:14.22. Triton's Mason McIntyre placed seventh with a time of 18:00.43.

Northfield finished with a score of 75 to win the girls' race. Tippecanoe Valley placed fifth, Triton eighth and Whitko 11th.

Natalie Guenin of Northfield won the race with a time of 16:32.75. Whitko's Susan Dome was fourth with a time of 17:20.59. Valley's Jenny Day was seventh with a time of 17:43.57, while Triton's Reghan Kreft was eighth with a time of 17:49.61.

Valley has a 4:30 p.m. race at Triton on Tuesday.

Whitko has a 4:30 p.m. race at Madison Grant on Tuesday.

TV Hosts Invitational

At Mentone, the Tippecanoe Valley Viking cross country team hosted a Saturday invitational.

Northfield won both races. The Northfield boys finished with a score of 29. Triton was sixth, while Whitko was eighth and Valley last.

Northfield's Chad Andrews won the race with a time of 17:14.22. Triton's Mason McIntyre placed seventh with a time of 18:00.43.

Northfield finished with a score of 75 to win the girls' race. Tippecanoe Valley placed fifth, Triton eighth and Whitko 11th.

Natalie Guenin of Northfield won the race with a time of 16:32.75. Whitko's Susan Dome was fourth with a time of 17:20.59. Valley's Jenny Day was seventh with a time of 17:43.57, while Triton's Reghan Kreft was eighth with a time of 17:49.61.

Valley has a 4:30 p.m. race at Triton on Tuesday.

Whitko has a 4:30 p.m. race at Madison Grant on Tuesday.
