Warsaw Golfers Beat Manchester

There's no place like home.

That's how Warsaw girls golf coach Bob Turner put it after Thursday's match with the Manchester Squires.

Turner went on to talk about how his team has improved throughout the season.

Both improvement and familiarity of their home course was evident Thursday, as the Tigers hosted and defeated the Squires 178-210 at Stonehenge Golf Club.[[In-content Ad]]It was Warsaw's best nine-hole score of the season.

"We've been in a slump lately, hopefully we're playing through it," said Turner, whose Tigers improved to 10-6 on the season. "We play well on this course. It's a tough course for opposing teams. We're familiar with this course and we play well here. Like they say, there's no place like home."

Alyssa Cameron earn match medalist honors and led Warsaw with a 43. Audrey Petro carded a 44 for the Tigers, while teammates Kayla Hutcherson and Sarah Hartle finished with 45 and 46, respectively.

Kristina Cripe, the Tigers' lone senior, turned in a 54.

Honoring Cripe on senior night, Turner penciled her into the No. 1 spot.

"Kristina Cripe played No. 1 for us tonight," said Turner. "She's never played lower than No. 4. I thought she played pretty well from the tee to the green."

Allison Mussey led the Squires with a 47, while Hayley Shafer carded a 51, Hannah Little turned in a 55 and Erika Milam finished with a 63. Katie Durden rounded out the Manchester lineup with a 68.

The 32-stroke loss dropped the Squires' season record to 5-9.

Because his team turned in its best score of the season as postseason play is just around the corner, and because it was at Stonehenge, Turner is excited about the upcoming sectional.

Before the Tigers host the sectional on Sept. 20, they'll play at McCormick Creek in Saturday's Northern Lakes Conference Match, something Turner would like to see his Tigers use a final tuneup and stepping stone for state tournament play.

Warsaw finished regular season NLC play with a 4-3 record.

"We're 4-3 in the conference, so we're not gonna win the conference, but I'd like to go there and have a nice showing," said Turner. "I'd like to use it as a stepping stone for the sectional. The sectional is at our place, and we play well here. The sectional is going to be about who shows up that day."

The Squires are in action again Saturday in the Three Rivers Conference Match at LaFontaine Golf Club in Huntington.
