Playing at Stonehenge Golf Club, the Tigers and Vikings played their own doubleheader, getting 18 holes in during their dual match, with Warsaw coming out on top 326-336.[[In-content Ad]]The reason for the extended match was in order to allow players to get some practice in for Saturday's Warsaw Sectional, also played at Stonehenge.
"It's pretty unusual after school has started, but with Daylight Savings Time, you can get that extra hour in," Valley coach Roger Moriarty said about playing 18 holes. "I was pleased that we got the chance to play 18. I told the guys we're planning on coming back over here (Thursday) to play 18 again, as a practice round. Under competitive competition, I think we got a lot more out of it tonight than we would out of a practice."
The decision to play the back-9 on top of the front was made Tuesday, with Warsaw coach Ben Barkey offering Valley a chance to get their first look at the course this year.
"I talked (Moriarty) into playing 18 holes today to get an 18 hole warm-up for Saturday," Barkey said. "It's good for their guys. They played very well. They had two outstanding scores."
Those outstanding scores were a 71 from Trey Stoll and a 78 from Caleb Rovenstine.
At last year's sectional, Stoll shot a 73 at Stonehenge, and by making par with his 71, his chances are looking pretty good again this year.
"He's capable of doing that anywhere," Moriarty said of Stoll's par score. "He works very hard at his game. He's a special player."
To get to par, Stoll posted three birdies and an eagle on the 18th. For the eagle, Stoll sunk his ball from 90 yards without a bounce.
"That's two strokes he probably didn't count on," Moriarty said of Stoll's 18th-hole eagle. "His short game is probably where he's made the biggest improvement this year."
The Tigers didn't have anyone finish below an 81, which was achieved by Scotty Boyle and Kal Denlinger, but also didn't have anyone finish above an 84 in the victory.
Following the 81s from Boyle and Denlinger, Jonas Susaraba and Mitchell Gauger each shot an 82, Ben Harris came in with an 83 and Eric Tandy completed the 18 holes with an 84.
"It's typical of our season," Barkey said of the scores, which all fell within three strokes of each other.
"We played O.K.," he added. "We shot our average with a 326, which is great."
A positive Barkey pointed out was that some of his guys shot three or four strokes over par on certain holes, but were still able to bounce back with respectable scores the rest of the way.
"That's been our battle the last two weeks - being mentally frustrated," he said. "I think this will be a mental boost for us going into Saturday."
Warsaw will look to defend its sectional crown Saturday, when the first flight of teams tee off at 11 a.m.
"It's gonna be tough Saturday," Barkey said. "We're going to have to come out here and play a little better. There's a lot of good players that will be out here, but we have to take care of our own stuff."
Last year, Warsaw, Wawasee and Manchester advanced out of the sectional, with Manchester's 330 making the cut.
Tippecanoe Valley took fifth at last year's match with a 336, narrowly missing the cut for regionals. Following Wednesday's visit to Stonehenge, along with another trip today, Moriarty hopes his guys get a good feel for the course.
"Tonight was preparation for the sectional," Moriarty said. "Our kids don't play on these kind of greens for the most part of the year. It takes a little time to adjust to those."
