Warsaw Golf Team Hits Road, Finds Stroke
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
NORTH MANCHESTER - Two days ago, the Warsaw Tiger golf team shot a 214 in a loss at Rozella Ford, its home course. But that score was inflated, Warsaw coach Bob Turner said, because the grass is extremely thick at Rozella now, making the course more difficult than usual. Get us on a different course, Turner said, and our scores will be better.
Sure enough, Turner was right.
The Tigers were on the road Tuesday night and were probably glad to play on a different course. Their scores backed up what Turner said - Warsaw beat Whitko 199-265 at Sycamore Golf Club, Whitko's home course.
Senior Tricia Suchecki fired a 47 on the par 36 course to lead Warsaw. She parred the fourth and eighth holes. Close behind her was Amy Landis, who shot a 48. Landis birdied the second hole. Julie Arnold and Brooke Westover each added 52s. Arnold parred the seventh hole. Freshman April Turner shot a 60, but her score was dropped from the team total.
"We have four pretty consistent golfers, and two others who are pretty close," Turner said.
Turner said the course had a lot to do with Warsaw's score dropping from 214 to 199 overnight.
"We played better here on a different course," Turner said.
The scores that Warsaw kept to determine the team total were all better than Whitko's best score. Melissa Sands led Whitko with a 57 in the Wildcats' first dual match of the season. Briana Waybright shot a 64, Kelly Moore a 70, Tina Osborn a 74 and Jodi Walton a 78.
In junior varsity action, Whitko's Cary Ostrom shot a 54, while Warsaw's Ashley Cooper shot a 57.
The Tigers, who are 3-2, have nearly completed half of their regular season while other teams are just getting started. They shot under 200 in all three wins. After five matches, Turner took time to talk about where his team is headed this year. With Arnold, Landis and Suchecki as seniors, he thinks his team will only get stronger as the season progresses.
"We'll have a better than average team," Turner said. "We have a team that is very close-knit that's fun to be around. We've had a dropoff at the end of the season with some recent teams. We're hoping to avoid that this year." [[In-content Ad]]
