SYRACUSE -ÊLast Tuesday, Warsaw and Goshen traveled to South Shore Golf Course to play a Northern Lakes Conference match against Wawasee. However, Mother Nature had other plans.

After less than half the match was finished last week, severe storms caused the golfers to leave the course and take shelter with Warsaw in the lead by two strokes.

Monday night in Syracuse the three teams met again for a do-over as the scores from last week were thrown out and the match began from the beginning. The Tigers shot a 146, while the Warriors finished with a 151 and Goshen had a 167.

Warsaw earned the five-stroke victory primarily because two golfers shot under par. Adam Johnson led the Tigers with a 34, 2-under the par 36, and Aaron Turner shot a 35, 1-under par.

"I think the team played excellent golf today, especially on this course," said Warsaw coach Bob Turner. "We had two guys under par, Adam Johnson had a 34 and Aaron Turner had a 35. To have two kids shoot under par on an away golf course is very good."

In fact, each member of Warsaw's varsity team shot under 40 on the evening. Ryan Slone finished with a 38, While Greg Clay and Justin Howell had 39s.

"This win is a tribute to the five guys who played here tonight," said Turner. "This was by far a total team effort. All five people played great games of golf tonight. We are pretty deep, with three sophomores playing, and this was a great performance. I am very proud of the team and I feel very good about this win."

This was the first loss of the season for Wawasee in head-to head matches. However, Wawasee coach Don Deck was not discouraged by the loss.

"We played very well tonight against what I believe to be the best team in the state (Warsaw)," said Deck. "They are certainly the best team we have faced all season. I am very pleased with the way the team played."

Eric Andrews led the Wawasee varsity squad with an even-par 36. However, Andrews' score was not the Warriors' top performance of the evening. Junior varsity golfer Justin Rider led the Wawasee squad with a 34 on the par-36 course.

"The whole team played pretty well," said Deck. "The fact is, they played very well despite the loss. Believe me, that 151 score will beat almost anybody."

Warsaw improves to 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in NLC play, while Wawasee is now 13-1 on the year and 3-1 in conference play. Goshen falls to 10-3 and 1-2 in conference matches. The Tigers host Concord and Northridge tonight, while the Warriors play Concord and NorthWood Thursday in Dunlap.

The three teams will meet again in Nappanee Saturday when the NorthWood Panthers host the Northern Lakes Conference Championship match at McCormick Creek Colf Course.
