SYRACUSE -ÊIf someone had told Warsaw girls golf coach Bob Turner that his team would begin the season 10-0 overall and 3-0 in Northern Lakes Conference play, he would have thought they were a bit off-balance.

But the Tigers keep surprising their coach. After defeating Wawasee and Goshen Tuesday night at Maxwelton Golf Course, the Warsaw squad is in fact 10-0 overall and 3-0 in NLC play.

"I wouldn't have believed it if someone told me we would be this successful," said Turner. "This is really a Cinderella story. I just hope the glass slipper doesn't fall off."

So why is Turner surprised with his team's success? After two players graduated last season and just two players returned from 1999's varsity squad, Turner thought the Tigers may have a bit of a down year.

"We've come a long way very quickly," said Turner. "These girls worked extremely hard this summer, and I think they are seeing the rewards of that hard work now."

The Tigers handed Goshen its first NLC loss, just the second Redskin loss of the season overall, by four strokes, 186-190. Wawasee shot a 223 to place third in the conference contest.

Warsaw's Kerri Wrobel was the medalist of the match with a 43, while Lara Reed was right on her heels with a 44. Erin Elliott followed closely with a 45, Brenna Good shot a 54, and Jaci Thallemer had a 57.

Although Wawasee was the host of the match, the Warriors struggled on the course.

"Last week we shot a 204 on this course," said Wawasee coach Scott DeHart. "Then we come out today and shoot a 223. It's a little frustrating. We were playing two of the top teams in the conference, but we expected to do a little better on our home course.

"We have some young girls, a good group of girls, but I did expect them to do a bit better on their home course. We didn't hit some shots we needed to hit to play well. It was frustrating for them. They would get a bad tee shot or second shot and then let that get to them and affect the rest of the hole. That put them in a bad position.

"All the girls are doing a good job. Right now, we just need to work on the mental aspect of our game. It will take some work, but we're gonna get there."

Ashley Ward led the Warriors with a 54, and Rebecca Stoelting shot a 55. Carrie Alles and Ashley Bell both shot 57s, while Aimee Niles rounded out the varsity squad with a 62.

The Warriors, now 6-7 and 0-2 in the NLC, hope to get back on the right track Thursday when they travel to Plymouth for another NLC match with Northridge and Plymouth.

"We hope to bounce back for Thursday," said DeHart. "The girls will work hard, and that's all I ask of them."

The Tigers will have more than a week off before they play at Plymouth Aug. 31.

"We don't have any more matches this week," said Turner. "Then we have to play Plymouth at their place, and that will be a major battle."
