Warsaw Golf Sectional Showcases Talented Teams
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
In the winter, when there's snow on the ground, young kids like to play a game called king of the hill.
The idea of the game is just like it sounds, to make it to the top and not be knocked off. To stay atop the rest of the players for as long as possible.
It seems as if Warsaw's varsity golf team has been doing this all season. And doing it well, too.
The Tigers will enter Saturday's sectional at Rozella Ford Golf Club with an 18-2 record. Included in that record are first-place finishes in the Michigan City Marquette Invite, Rochester Invite and the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament. Go ahead and throw in their perfect 6-0 regular season record in the NLC and they have a conference championship as well.
What makes Saturday's sectional so interesting for the Tigers is the fact that they will enter with a losing streak. At one point they were 18-0 and held a top-20 state ranking. Wednesday they shot a team-score of 162 but lost to Elkhart Memorial and South Bend St. Joe 160 and 161, respectively.
How will those losses affect them going into Saturday?
"We played well against two good teams," said Warsaw coach Bob Turner. "The loss didn't affect us one way or the other because we had to play on a tough course. What it will do is make us a little more hungry. When you go undefeated there's always a loss somewhere. We're ready to nail some people on Saturday. They're ready right now. They're an angry team."
The top three teams will advance to the regional round. And according to Turner 310-318 will get a team out of the sectional. To score 310-318 a coach must have the confidence that his whole team will play well. Turner has that luxury.
"We have five guys that can shoot 40 or less," said Turner. "Some teams may have one or two players that are better than us but our guys just back each other up. I feel comfortable with our depth. You have to hope your top players don't falter but I have confidence in all my players.
With an 18-2 record, and their home course, this has to make Warsaw the favorite right?
"I think the other coaches would say Warsaw," said Turner. "It's our course. With four teams there that are considered favorites, the main objective has to be to get out not winning. Getting out, that's our No. 1 goal."
The four teams that Turner considered to be favorites, Warsaw, Wawasee, Tippecanoe Valley, and Culver Military Academy, will all tee off at 1 p.m. The first tee times Saturday are 11 a.m.
