Warsaw Going Nuts Over Holiday Season

The holiday season is already nutty enough, but few complain at the Salvation Army's own contribution of nuts during the holiday season.

The Warsaw Salvation Army Auxiliary, along with help from many volunteers, received an order Wednesday morning of six and a half tons of various nuts at the Center Lake Pavilion.

Wednesday marked the beginning of the Auxiliary's annual nut sale, which raises money to financially support the organization's many efforts to contribute to the community over the winter months.

The nuts, which Creighton Brothers picked up in Chicago and delivered to Warsaw free of charge, were unloaded and sorted over a three-hour span. For the last two days, individuals were then allowed to pick up orders, some of which consisted of more than 200 pounds of cashews, pistachios and chocolate-covered peanuts.

"A majority of these bags will be picked up today," Marge Gast, a member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary, said during a Wednesday interview. "But every year, we all think it looks like the biggest amount of nuts you'll ever see in one place."

Gast, who helps to hand out hundreds of nut orders every year, said she couldn't be happier with the county's efforts to support the fundraiser.

"The whole thing that makes this work are the people in the community who lend a hand and support our cause," she said. "I can't stress enough the amount of help we receive every year from everyone. We're truly blessed to live in the community that we do."

Nut sales go towards efforts to fund scholarships for local students, purchase shoes for children needing proper foot wear during the colder months and help residents cover heating winter bills.

"We spend our money very carefully," Gast said. "We're one of the most prosperous auxiliaries in the state, and a major amount of that comes from our nut sales."

Individuals who did not place orders earlier this year will still be able to purchase all assortments of the nuts at Just for Kids, 212 W. Jefferson St., Dec. 6.

The Salvation Army fundraiser began in the 1940s when bags were sold out of Cox Studio's original Main Street location. Over the years, the event has grown to its new, six-and-a-half-ton demand.

Now nuts are shipped all over the country after leaving the Center Lake Pavilion. Gast said people send them to Florida, Ohio and numerous cities in Indiana outside of Kosciusko. [[In-content Ad]]
