Picking up their third sectional title in four years, Warsaw racked up 279 points in the sectional finals, while Plymouth took second with a 244.[[In-content Ad]]"Plymouth beat us at conference, so our motivation was to come back and get them at sectional," Warsaw coach Terry Aukeman said. "We've been ready for this the last two weeks."
At the Northern Lakes Conference meet two weeks ago at Concord High School, Plymouth placed third with a 157, while Warsaw took fourth with 147 points.
In their latest showdown, three individual first-place finishes, as well as a first in the 200 free relay, push the home team over the top.
"We're swimming our best times of the year right now," Aukeman said. "Sometimes, we swim our best times at conference, but this year, we did it at sectional."
By placing first at this weekend's sectionals, individual swimmers punched their tickets to this week's state finals, held at the IUPUI Natatorium. State prelims will be Friday at 6 p.m., with the finals to followed Saturday at 1 p.m.
Warsaw sophomore Leah Moore made it to state by winning the 200 IM (2:17.67) and 100 fly (1:00.80), with junior teammate Audrey Petro joining her at state with a first in the 50 free (25.51).
On top of swimming in the individual events, Moore and Petro will also join sophomores Marisa Vogel and Kayla Hutcherson in the 200 free relay.
The 200 free relay team advanced to state by holding off Columbia City, who finished just behind Warsaw's 1:44.74 with a 1:45.74.
"It was a real good race, with us having the best time we've had in a while," Aukeman said.
"(Columbia City has) really good swimmer with Haley Richter, with her anchoring," he added. "I just told my girls, 'Let's get Audrey a lead see what we can do.'"
What they did was win the race, giving the girls an opportunity to compete with the state's best.
"We're going to have a nice, fun week getting ready," Aukeman said about the state meet. "We're excited about it."
