Warsaw Girls Win Second Straight

Warsaw senior standout Julie Seiss, wearing jersey No. 14 instead of her standard 15 because it has to be replaced, was an efficient 8-of-12 shooting en route to a game-high 20 points Saturday evening.
The rest of the Tiger squad was sharp from the field as well in a 61-45 win over previously undefeated Crown Point.
Warsaw exploited a weakness in the heart of Crown Point's defense as the Tigers used dribble penetration to create easy baskets.
The Tigers jumped out to a 12-2 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Jennifer Scherer, a night after a career-high 13-point effort against Valley, scored six points in the first quarter to compliment Seiss' seven.
Warsaw pushed its lead to 27-11 before Crown Point strung together four quick points. Any momentum the Bulldogs had was quickly erased as Tiger junior Danielle DeGeeter nailed a three-pointer as time expired in the second quarter to give Warsaw a 30-15 halftime lead.
Crown Point was woeful from the field in the first half and finished 16 of 46 (35 percent) for the game. Many of the Bulldogs' missed shots were due to defensive pressure from Warsaw.
Despite being smaller than Crown Point, the Tigers were able to match the Bulldogs physically.
"Our defensive effort was really good tonight," said Warsaw head coach John Snyder. "To our credit, our girls battled physically all night long. And mentally they were sharp."
While the Bulldogs held a 31-20 rebounding advantage, the Tigers forced Crown Point into 18 turnovers.
Since Warsaw had matchup troubles inside against the Bulldogs, the Tigers just shot over Crown Point.
At one point, the Tigers hit three straight three-pointers then an old-fashioned three-point play to push their lead to 21 points.
Point guard Amy Abbitt capped the 12-point run with the basket and made free throw. Abbitt, not typically known for her scoring acumen, was aggressive on offense and finished with seven points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting.
The Bulldogs battled back and turned up the heat on their full-court press. Despite a 15-point lead late in the fourth quarter, Snyder wasn't chalking up a win.
"With three minutes left I'm still scared," said Sndyer. "A Tom May-coached team is always dangerous."
Crown Point's press bothered Warsaw at points late in the game but despite the pressure, the Bulldogs couldn't close to within 10 points of the Tigers.
Senior Stephanie Poulos led Crown Point with 13 points as she went 4 of 11 from the field. Courtney Perry scored nine points and pulled down seven rebounds while Katie Kvachkoff came off the bench to score seven points.
Scherer finished with 10 points while DeGeeter had nine to round out Seiss' 20. Kim Clay and Kate Denlinger came off the Warsaw bench to score six points each.
Despite scoring just three points and grabbing four rebounds, Snyder was impressed with Tasia Smith's frontcourt play.
"Tasia has played bigger people all season long," said Snyder. "Tonight she blocked out, got loose balls and really put herself out there without worrying about how many points she scores. All great teams need players like that."
After a sluggish performance against Valley Friday where the Tigers had just eight points midway through the second quarter, Warsaw looked like a different team Saturday against Crown Point.
And Snyder hopes the team that showed up against the Bulldogs shows up Tuesday when DeKalb comes to the Tiger Den.
The Barons ousted Warsaw from the state tournament last year and return virtually their entire roster from last season.
"DeKalb put us out of the tournament last year," said Snyder. "Our hands are going to be full with them."
