That's exactly what the Lady Tigers did Saturday night, as they opened the 2008-2009 season with a 66-56 win over the visiting Huntington North Lady Vikings.[[In-content Ad]]"That's my goal," Harter said when asked about all her players being involved in the 10-point win. "Everyone got involved. We turned things around in the second half, we got to the free throw line and we played as a team."
Warsaw, which trailed 27-19 at halftime, made adjustments and then outscored the Lady Vikings 23-5 in the third quarter.
The Lady Tigers led by as many as 17, 59-42, in the fourth qurter.
"Part of it was I think we relaxed a bit in the third quarter," said Harter, who became the first female varsity head basketball coach at Warsaw since Mary Hurley nearly 25 years ago. "They got chewed out (in the locker room). I told them they were working hard to get open shots, now it's time to put the ball in the basket."
After making just five field goals in the first half, the Lady Tigers made good on eight field goal attempts in the second half.
What set Warsaw apart from Huntington North was the Lady Tigers' ability to get to the free throw line.
After hitting 9 of 12 charity tosses in the first half, Warsaw was 28 of 36 from the free throw line in the second half, finishing 37 of 48 (77 percent) for the game.
"That's very impressive," Harter said when asked about her team's effort at the free throw line. "I didn't realize we made that many."
Huntington North converted 23 of 28 free throw attempts in the game, a contest in which both teams combined for 61 fouls. The Lady Vikings' Abby Armstrong was the only player to foul out.
Of the 11 Warsaw players that got in the game, nine of them scored.
Kelci Freds led the way with a game-high 15 points, scoring 13 points in the second half.
With the game knotted at 31-all late in the third quarter, a rebound-and-bucket, as well as the ensuing free throw, gave the Lady Tigers the momentum they were looking for.
Freds then hit back-to-back three-pointers, as Warsaw took a 42-32 lead into the fourth quarter.
"I talked to Kelci," said Harter. "She just got down a little bit. She missed a few shots, and then picked up her third foul. I told her I needed her on the floor. I told her I need the Kelci that can play defense and make big plays. All the girls stepped up and made plays. I'm proud of all of them."
Liz Tat scored 11 points for the Tigers, while fellow starters Alex Glenn and Kayla Stout scored 10 points each.
Cendall Ogle, Warsaw's point guard, was the only starter who didn't finish in double figures, as she scored seven points in the win. All Ogles points came from the free throw line.
What Ogle did was run the offense of a team with just two seniors that was playing its first game with a first-time varsity coach.
"We had four of the five starters in double figures," said Harter. "I'm very happy about that. Like I said, we're going to get everyone involved and play like a team. Cendall Ogle did a great job handling the ball and running the team."
For Huntington North, Liesl Davenport scored 15 points, while Taylor Foley scored 12, Jordan Parrett finished with nine points and Armstrong chipped in with eight points.
The Lady Vikings were also playing for a new head coach, Kelly (Jones) Morrison, who was a talented three-point shooter on Huntington North's 1995 state championship team and later at DePauw.
Warsaw is in action again Friday when the Lady Tigers host county rival Tippecanoe Valley.
