Warsaw Girls Roll Over Concord
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Since losing to Perry Meridian by three points in overtime in the Lady Tiger Tournament the Warsaw girls basketball team had won their last two games by an average of 24 points.
Saturday night was a similar story as the ungracious host dismantled Concord 64-30.
While the Tigers weren't burning the nets from the field, they held the Minutemen to 25 percent shooting, including a scoreless fourth quarter. Concord kept it fairly close for one quarter.
Strong interior play by Jacyln Leininger and Janna Knisley coupled by the outside presence of Hilary O'Connell proved to be too much for Concord.
Both teams came out sloppy to start the game. Leininger scored the first points of the game at 6:15 in the first.
Warsaw was able to nip its turnover woes in the bud fairly early. But Concord continued to struggle with giving the ball away the whole game. When the Minutemen did have the ball, it was the tandem of Jenna Barghahn and Andres Jenkins who kept the Minutemen in the game. The duo scored eight of the team's 10 first quarter points to leave them down 18-10 after one quarter.
Leininger and Knisley led Warsaw early and often. Leininger had nine first-quarter points while Knisley had five first-quarter rebounds, three of which were offensive.
The second quarter saw Warsaw's lead quickly swell from eight to 15. While Concord continued to battle, turnovers on its end quickly led to points on Warsaw's end. In the first half the Tigers turned 18 turnovers into 24 points.
The second half didn't differ much from the first. Warsaw came out of the break a little sluggish.
As a team, the Tigers shot 45 percent from the field in the first half.
The third quarter saw the team's percentage dip to 26 percent, but Concord was unable to capitalize, only keep pace.
The Minutemen were able to put a lid on their turnover situation, giving up only two in the third. That didn't translate to points.
Concord only shot 35 percent in the third quarter. Despite outscoring the Tigers 14-12, the Minutemen still found themselves down 49-30 going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter saw Concord's shooting percentage plummet. Concord couldn't buy a basket as it went 0 for 15 from the field in the final period.
Leininger added a basket to bring her scoring total to 22 before sitting out the rest of the game. Knisley scored seven points and tallied a few more rebounds to give her a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Warsaw coach Will Weinhorst was pleased with Knisley's performance.
"Janna Knisley is playing really good basketball for us the past few weeks," he said. "She's always worked hard and done nice things for us. It's really nice to see the hard work and as the season wears down, to see our seniors step up for us."
Weinhorst knows his team needs to improve as they inch closer to the sectional. The team has been tinkering with a new offensive scheme. Weinhorst is happy with his team's adaptability.
"We came out and got the lead early," he said. "We wanted to try out some new things on offense, more of a motion set offense. Before we set more screens and now we're looking to take advantage of mismatches and use more cuts to the basket and I thought we did well with that."
Warsaw now 14-3 (5-2) travels to Whitko (5-12) Tuesday night.

Wawasee Picks Up NLC Win Over Plymouth
By Jen Gibson, Times-Union Sports Editor
SYRACUSE -ÊBefore Saturday night's game against Plymouth, Wawasee center Jocelyn Higginbotham was feeling a bit under the weather.
"She was not feeling good before the game," said Wawasee coach Kem Zolman. "In the past, that has been a bad sign for us."
But anyone who saw Higginbotham's performance in the first half of Wawasee's 51-37 Northern Lakes Conference win would never have known she was not in tip-top shape.
She scored Wawasee's first three baskets of the game, and by the end of the first half she had eight points on 4-of-6 shooting, two rebounds and a steal.
"Jocelyn was a holy terror inside," said Zolman. "For her to stick it out and play through being sick was great for us tonight. We need her to be an inside force, and she played very well.
At the end of the first quarter, the Warriors held a 15-10 advantage.
Wawasee then held Plymouth to just four points in the second quarter as Shanna Zolman, Meagan Wallen and Higginbotham combined to score 11 for a 26-14 halftime lead.
Wawasee continued its offensive assault through the second half behind strong input from Wallen and Shanna Zolman. Wallen poured in 11 and Zolman added 12 points as Wawasee outscored Plymouth 25-21 in the last two quarters of play.
"Tonight was really good, and I am really happy with their performance," said Kem Zolman. "One thing that has concerned us is our overall defense, but we are making strides. Going up against Plymouth, who is known for their defense, it was important for us to get out there and match up with them.
"And for us to go up against them and execute our offense like we did was just great."
Shanna Zolman led all scorers with 24 points, and her teammate Meagan Wallen chipped in 15. Zolman pulled down nine rebounds, dished out eight assists and grabbed two steals. Higginbotham finished the game with eight points, five steals, five rebounds and two assists.
Stacey Wendel led the Pilgrims with 11 points, while Lindsay Houin added eight points.
Wawasee is 18-2 overall and 5-0 in the NLC. The Warriors face off against Tippecanoe Valley Tuesday evening in Akron.
NOTES: Saturday night was the first time Wawasee has played at home since Shanna Zolman broke the girls state scoring record January 12. Before the varsity game, Wawasee coaches presented a plaque to Zolman to recognize for her accomplishment as a high school athlete, The plaque highlighted "the four elements that exemplify the outstanding virtues (Zolman has) shown: discipline, leadership, courage and passion. ... Zolman needs just 200 points to reach Damon Bailey's mark of 3,134.

Josh Roa, Grant Gibson Snag NLC Wrestling Title
By Jim Brenneman, Times-Union Sports Correspondent
GOSHEN - In the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament, Wawasee, with 143 points, had two champions and two runners up to earn fourth place as a team.
Meanwhile, Warsaw had three seconds and wound up in sixth place with 142 points, just one point behind the Warriors.
Northwood finished first in the conference tournament with four individual champions and 202 points. However, the NLC season championship went to Elkhart Memorial with a 6-1 record on the season and a second place finish in the tournament.
Wawasee's Wrestlers in the Finals
Wawasee sent four wrestlers to championship matches, with Josh Roa (145 pounds) and Grant Gibson (152) coming home with firsts.
Roa repeated as champion, and remains undefeated on the season. En route to the finals he first pinned Warsaw's Thomas Balestri in 4:33, and then he took a 12-5 decision over Matt Read of Plymouth.
In his finals bout, against Tom Iannarelli of Elkhart Memorial, Roa found himself behind at the end of period one, 4-2. However, in period two Roa kicked it into gear and remained in control until the final buzzer. In the last two stanzas Roa scored seven takedowns for the 17-11 win.
Gibson reached the finals by pinning Keegan Campbell of Plymouth in 31 seconds, and next he won a 7-5 overtime decision against Josh Metzler of NorthWood. In the championship match he defeated Goshen's Trent Beachy in a convincing 12-0 major decision.
Eric Vallejo (112) lost a 14-6 major decision in the championship to seventh-ranked Chris Miller of Memorial. Earlier in the day Vallejo recorded two pins (1:14 and 0:33). Trevor Brown (160) recorded a fall and a decision (1:59 and 14-9) to advance to the finals but was bested by NorthWood's Chad Davis, 10-3.
Other Place Winners for Wawasee
Deme Vallejo (119) took fourth with two wins and two losses, as did German Vallejo (135), Mike Hanlin (140). Cody Ramseyer (125) took fifth place, as did Mike Hanlin (189), and Mike Hall (215).
Warsaw's Wrestlers in the Finals
Warsaw had three wrestlers reach the championship round, but each of them had to settle for runner-up honors.
After a forfeit and a 4-1 decision Anthony Boley (119) came to the championship round where he tangled with second-ranked Tom Skinner and lost 6-2.
Tanner Connealy (125) recorded a fall (5:39) and a major decision (14-4) to come to the finals where he was bested by David Blea of Northridge, 8-3.
Kyle Boley (135) advanced to the championship match on the strength of two first period pins (1:10 and 1:06). Boley now has 20 pins on the season, but he came away with runner-up honors after a 6-1 loss to Dillon Whitacre of NorthWood.
Other Place Winners for Warsaw
Matt Palladino (130) won his first match by fall (2:47). Then, after losing a semi-final match to the eventual champ Troy Cox of NorthWood, Palladino
came back with two more wins to take third place. His final victory came by fall against Ron Powell of Northridge in 4:28.
Tyler Miller also took third place. He won his opening match but lost in the semi-finals. Miller went on to take two more victories, earning third place by
defeating Dan Laughlin of Goshen, 6-4. Jacob Boots (215) won third place when he narrowly edged NorthWood's David Mishler 3-2.
David Ferguson (275) notched a couple of falls, but was also twice the victim of a fall for a fourth place finish.
After a forfeit in round one, Adam Galvin (171) was beaten by eventual champion Nathan Bieszka of Plymouth. A second loss put Galvin in a match for
fifth place where he chewed out an 8-5 victory.
Brandon Cordell (145) went 1-3 on the day to finish in sixth place. Thomas Balestri (145) lost in round one to the eventual champion Josh Roa of
Wawasee. Balestri came back to record a fall in twenty-three seconds, but lost his next two matches for a sixth place finish. Brandon LaFollette lost his first
match but then had the pleasure of nailing an opponent in forty-six seconds before losing two more matches for sixth place.
This tournament was a tightly contested event, as Wawasee, Goshen, and Warsaw finished within one point of each other at 143,142.5 and 142,
respectively. The evenly matched competition is attested by the fact that the only match in the finals decided by pin was at 275, when returning champ Ryan
Eaton of Northridge tallied his third fall of the day. All of the other champions were determined by decisions: seven simple decisions and a 1-1 overtime
victory, along with four major decisions.
The next wrestling for both Wawasee and Warsaw is sectional competition, on Saturday, January 26. Warsaw hosts its own sectional while Wawasee
travels to East Noble.

Northridge Girls Earn NLC Swim Title
By Mike Madison, Times-Union Sports Correspondent
DUNLAP -ÊGoing into the Northern Lakes Conference Girls Swimming Championships, everyone knew that it was most likely a two-team race for the title.
They were right.
Concord, which came in ranked sixth in the state, hoped to hold on to the title it won each of the past two years.
Standing in Concord's way was Northridge, which went undefeated in the regular dual-meet season. Northridge's biggest win came over over Concord by a 95-91 margin.
The teams didn't disappoint as the NLC Championship went down to the wire, with Northridge picking up a 316-314 victory in Concord's pool.
Coming in third was Plymouth with 202 points, and then Wawasee with 166 and Warsaw with 149. Goshen was next at 99 followed by Northwood with 47 and Elkhart Memorial with 32.
While Northridge and Concord were expected to be at the top, the next three spots seemed up for grabs with Plymouth having a little edge and Wawasee and Warsaw expected to be battling for fourth and fifth.
While Tiger coach Terry Aukeman was happy with his girls and their effort, he was still a little upset with the finish.
"We had a lot of best times today but we still came up a little short," he said. "I am still a little upset about losing to Wawasee, but we had a lot of best times of the year and some lifetime bests. Overall we swam great."
Wawasee coach Roger Karns was all smiles at the end of the day and had three simple words, "I am thrilled."
The day began showing just how fast everyone would need to go as the Concord relay team set a NLC and pool record by going 1:51.42 in the 200 individual relay. Wawasee took third and Warsaw fourth in the event.
In the 200-yard freestyle it was Laura Noggle taking fifth for the Tigers.
In the 50-yard freestyle Tiger Claire Beckett went into the championships tied with a No. 2 seed. She actually improved on that time but finished fourth. Wawasee's Sarah Marty also qualified for the final heat and finished sixth.
In the diving finals, Wawasee's Libby Brown took fifth while Warsaw's Angie Ziebarth finished seventh.
Ziebarth dove well in the finals jumping from 10th to her seventh-place finish. Wawasee's Megan Medlock finished ninth and Warsaw's Kayla Hickman was 10th.
Wawasee's Sarah Marty made the finals of the 100-yard butterfly and finished sixth in that event.
Warsaw's Beckett came back in the 100-yard freestyle with another excellent performance taking a fourth.
In the 500-yard freestyle it was the Tiger's Laura Noggle making the finals again, this time taking third after knocking two seconds off her preliminary time.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay the Tigers took fourth, a solid five seconds in front of the fifth-place team from Wawasee. Swimming for the Tigers were Claire Beckett, Becca Noggle, Laura Noggle, and Aislinn Ummel.
Wawasee slipped into fourth-place overall when it placed two girls in the top four of the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Liz White had a lifetime best taking second and not far behind was teammate, freshman Lisa Gunderson taking fourth.
In the 100-yard breaststroke another Wawasee freshman made the finals as Laura MacOwan swam to a sixth-place finish.
In the final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, Wawasee took fourth, a second and a half ahead of the Tigers who were fifth.
"We knew it was going to be pretty close between the three of us (Plymouth, Wawasee, and Warsaw)," said Aukeman. "Plymouth has a lot of depth in a meet like this. In a dual meet, we can keep it close but at a championship meet like this Plymouth can do well, especially with their relays. I think all our girls did great today."
Warsaw's girls hit the pool again this week as they travel to Elkhart Central. Wawasee is off until the sectional preliminaries January 31.
