HUNTINGTON — Things started off slowly, but once the Warsaw girls basketball team got its footing, it ran away from the Huntington North Lady Vikings Saturday afternoon.
Opening the season in Huntington, the Warsaw Lady Tigers used an 11-0 run to begin the second quarter to catapult them to a 66-44 victory over the Lady Vikings (0-1).
"We picked up our defensive intensity toward the end of the first quarter," Warsaw coach Michelle Harter said. "That's really going to be a big key for us. Our defense is going to help make our offense even better, because it helps us relax."
The start of the game was something of a concern for Harter, as the season-opener was the first time her team had squared off with girls in different uniforms.
"We didn't have our scrimmage, and we'd been playing against each other for three weeks, so we weren't real sure how the girls were going to come out," she said.
Trailing 11-8 at the end of the first, Warsaw went on its 11-0 run to extend out to a 19-11 lead following a bucket by senior Sarah Heagy at the 3:41 mark of the second quarter.
The basket was one of Heagy's nine field goals on the day, as she finished with a game-high 21 points to go with seven rebounds.
"Against the zone, Sarah Heagy stepped in and was our flasher," Harter said about the team's lone senior. "We hadn't practiced that, be she listened in practice and knew what she was supposed to do. She just did a great job. Having her and (sophomore) Nikki (Grose) in there, with the way they can pass, I feel quite comfortable with that."
With Heagy and Grose each standing at 6-foot-1, they created fits for the Lady Vikings defense, completing interior passes routinely for easy hoops.
"It's really nice to have good post players, and they can pass as well," Harter said.
Heagy was 9 of 11 from the field, while Grose made four of her six shots, posting eight points to go with her nine rebounds, two blocked shots and two assists.
"This year, they're looking to get the ball high off of the glass," Harter said about the post players' high field goal percentage. "They're also slowing themselves down, not flipping it up there."
After hitting just 2 of 10 shots in the opening quarter, the Lady Tigers went on to make 24 of their next 32.
The Lady Tigers finished the game with 14 steals and 12 assists, with junior Lindsay Baker posting six of each, while also nabbing six rebounds.
Junior Jennifer Walker-Crawford also had a solid game for Warsaw, finishing with 10 points, three rebounds, two steals, an assist and a blocked shot.
In all, 10 of Warsaw's 11 players scored at least two points, as all 11 got into the game in the first quarter.
"Getting all the girls into the game is something I really wanted to do in the first quarter," Harter said. "That way, they could get their feet wet a little bit and be ready to go — get some of those nerves and jitters out."
And even though Warsaw did force Huntington North into 23 turnovers, it committed 25 of its own, and that's something that will need to be cleaned up when the Lady Tigers travel to Class 2A No. 1 Fort Wayne Bishop Luers Tuesday.
"They're definitely going to be a quicker team, a more athletic team," Harter said about Luers. "They're going to look to put a lot of pressure on us in the full court and half court. We're going to have to take care of the basketball. We had 25 turnovers today. Part of that was jitters, part of it was just reading each other out there on the court."
