AKRON -ÊIf Friday night's girls basketball game between Warsaw and Tippecanoe Valley had a theme, it could be "missed opportunities."

The Vikings had a chance to tie the score late in the game, but could not find the offense to do it. The Tigers could have put the game away in the second quarter, but a scoring drought prevented it.

Warsaw held a 40-32 advantage after three quarters of play, and extended that lead to 42-32 when Natalie Chabot hit the first basket of the fourth frame.

However, the Vikings slowly chipped away at Warsaw's lead by making a 6-0 run early in the final stanza. Tabitha Pratt converted a three-point play by sinking a free throw after good basket with 7:23 left in the game to make the score 42-35.

Then Letitia Clauson hit a free throw to cut the deficit to six, 42-36.

Pratt followed with another basket at the 6:42 mark to slice the Tiger lead to four points, 42-38.

Warsaw's Hilary O'Connell and Valley's Sara Zehr traded baskets to keep the difference at four, 44-40.

At the 3:38 mark, Ashley Wyatt hit a three-pointer for the Tigers to up their advantage to seven, 47-40.

But Valley kept on fighting back. Kathy Prater converted two shot from the charity stripe, and then Abby Shafer nailed a trey to put the Viking within two, 47-45, with just 1:03 left in regulation.

With 54.3 ticks on the clock, Wyatt stepped to the free throw line with a one-and-bonus situation. She missed the first shot, but teammate Janna Knisely got the rebound, made a basket and was fouled on the play. Knisely converted the bonus basket, and Warsaw suddenly increased its lead from two to five, 50-45.

"We thought we were in a pretty good position at 47-45," said Valley coach Gary Teel. "We thought we had them rattled. But it was just one of those things. We thought it was going to be a long rebound off the basket. They got the point and then got fouled, and that put them up by five. Then we went into desperation mode"

On the next play, Valley passed the ball out of bounds, giving possession back to the Tigers. Senior O'Connell hit a basket with 48 second on the clock to give Warsaw a cushion, and then 20 seconds later she hit two free throws to make the Tiger lead 54-45.

Jaclyn Leininger netted a free throw with 18.9 second left on the clock to give Warsaw the 55-45 victory.

"Well, it's a win," said Wienhorst. "We'll take it. We did not attack the basket. We stood. We had 24 turnovers, which is not bad for the first game, but we made some bad passes."

O'Connell led the Tigers with 15 points, including 7 of 7 free throws, and led the team in assists with seven. Leininger pulled down nine rebounds and was 3-of-5 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe for 11 points. Michelle DeGeeter and Knisely netted eight points each.

Pratt led the Viking scoring attack with 10 points and three steals. Parker added nine points, five rebounds and eight assists. Prater tallied eight points, while Shafer netted six.

The Tigers are 1-0 on the season and hosts Homestead tonight in the Tiger Den.

"Homestead is 0-2, but they lost a close game to Snider, and they lost to Elmhurst,"s aid Wienhorst. "If we don't go into tomorrow's game with more energy than we did tonight, we might be in trouble."

Tippecanoe Valley moves to 2-1 on the season. The Vikings are in action again tonight at Culver.

"We made some mistakes, but we played hard," said Teel. "We will get better with experience. The kids went in, played their roles and did an adequate job. We played tough, and I think this is the best we've played Warsaw in a while."

"Those (Valley) girls are going to win some ball games," said Wienhorst. "They are going to do a lot of good stuff."

NOTES: Warsaw was up by 20-15 at the 6:49 mark in the second quarter, but both teams went more than two minutes without scoring ... The Tigers were up by as much as 12 points in the third frame before Valley cut the lead back down to two in the fourth.
