Warsaw Girls Lose On Senior Night
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
For a group that seen it's share of ups and downs, Thursday night's game against Northern Lakes Conference foe Elkhart Memorial served as a fitting snapshot.
Six Warsaw seniors ended their regular season careers on the Tiger Den floor in a 47-46 loss to the Crimson Chargers.
Jennifer Scherer, one of the six seniors, put Warsaw up 46-45 after she nailed two free throws with 20.6 seconds left in regulation.
Memorial answered right back as Abby Kinder retrieved an offensive rebound of a missed Alyssa Pittman three-pointer and banked home a layup to give her team a 47-46 lead with 6.5 seconds left to play.
After a dangerous inbound that saw Amy Abbit launch a half-court pass into the arms of Kate Denlinger, Warsaw took it's fourth timeout of the quarter.
The Tigers found their go-to player in senior Julie Seiss on the ensuing inbound. Seiss drove down the lane before running into a couple of Memorial defenders. Her running layup danced off the rim as time expired to give the Crimson Chargers a key conference win.
With the victory, Memorial secured second place in the NLC by itself with a 6-1 record. It was also Memorial's seventh straight win as the Crimson Chargers end the season with a 16-4 record overall.
It was the second straight conference loss for the Tigers, who lost 43-35 to NorthWood Saturday.
And while a loss is still a loss, second-year Warsaw head coach John Snyder can handle the loss to Memorial a bit better.
"I told the girls this has a different feel than Saturday," said Snyder. "We competed tonight. We didn't execute at times. We missed layups and turned the ball over, but I feel we competed better."
In the loss to NorthWood, the Tigers committed more than 20 turnovers and were lethargic offensively for most of the night.
Against Memorial, the Tigers looked perhaps as sharp as they have all season in the second quarter.
Seiss and Scherer provided a nice inside-outside combination as they scored 12 points in the second quarter to give Warsaw a 24-22 lead.
Pittman finally recaptured the lead for Memorial with a jumper midway through the third quarter to make the score 31-30.
Pittman, the Crimson Chargers' leading scorer, scored just four points in the first half but scored six points in the third quarter as Memorial moved out in front.
While Pittman was held relatively in check by the defense of Seiss, she scored 13 points on 6-of-17 shooting, the Tigers couldn't find an answer for Kinder.
Not only did the 5-foot-10 junior score what turned out to be the game-winning basket, she dominated the post.
Kinder ended the night with 19 points while pulling down seven rebounds.
"She was simply more physical than we were," said Snyder of Kinder's performance.
Emotions dominated the postgame as the six seniors, Abbitt, Kim Clay, Katie Logan, Scherer, Seiss and Tasia Smith all talked with WRSW's Roger Grossman about their high school basketball careers.
During their time at Warsaw, this group of seniors saw a state championship run during their sophomore year, the non-renewal of former coach Will Wienhorst's contract, the hiring of Snyder and last year's disappointing sectional loss to DeKalb.
"They've had a lot of success and faced a lot of adversity," said Snyder of his seniors. "They kept listening and working hard. And our goal hasn't changed. It's still a sectional championship."
Before Thursday's game, Seiss was recognized as one of 1,000 players from around the country nominated for the McDonalds All-American Game in San Diego.
Michelle Harter's Warsaw junior varsity squad ended its season with a 63-22 win, finishing with a 19-2 record overall and 7-0 mark in the NLC.
The varsity squad now turns its attention to the East Noble Sectional. Warsaw enters the sectional with a 12-8 record and is in action Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday's Carroll-DeKalb game.
