The win wasn't too flashy, but it was a win.

Defeating the visiting Columbia City Lady Eagles 53-32 Tuesday in the Tiger Den, Warsaw's varsity girls basketball team picked up its second win in three games, improving to 7-5 on the year.[[In-content Ad]]"This is always a good win for us," Warsaw coach Michelle Harter said of her Lady Tigers beating the 5-8 Eagles. "Columbia City has always been a good rival of Warsaw."

Owning a 26-18 series advantage, Warsaw earned its seventh-straight win over the Eagles thanks to a 35-21 advantage on the boards.

"You have to have the desire to get down there and crash the boards," Columbia City's 33-year head coach Wayne Kreiger said.

With a lack of desire to get those boards, Columbia City surrendered 21 offensive rebounds to the Tigers, leading to 18 second-chance points for the home team.

"This is one of the teams we play, that we have a height advantage on, and we took advantage of that," Harter said. "We got the girls to step up. To get 21 offensive rebounds is just awesome."

Warsaw's leading rebounder was junior Kelci Freds, who hauled in eight boards to go with a team-high six assists and four steals.

Freds also netted 12 points, joining sophomore Kayla Stout's team-high 13, junior Cendall Ogle's nine and senior Liz Tat's eight points, resulting in another well-balanced scoring effort.

"They were trying to focus in on Kelci Freds and Liz Tat, so others stepped up, with Kayla Stout, (junior) Sarah Shilling and Cendall Ogle, who scored nine points," Harter said. "I always tell the girls, if all five are scoring at one time, we can make it very hard for other teams to defend us."

Playing just six girls in the game, Kreiger's been coaching a makeshift squad, with junior Janelle Moss making her first appearance of the year against Warsaw.

"This is the first time we've played together in 13 games," Kreiger said. "This is the first time we've had Moss and (sophomore Sierria) Burlage."

The Eagles were led by junior Alex Bumyan's 12 points, three steals and two assists, while Moss posted seven rebounds.

With a full team or not, the Eagles got behind early to the Tigers, and never really got back into it.

Following a Freds' three-pointer 15 seconds into the game, Warsaw added a couple of Tat free throws and an Ogle bucket to lead 7-0 three minutes into the game and never looked back.

Hurting the Eagles' effort in the comeback attempt were 25 turnovers.

"Obviously, when you turn the ball over that many times, you give the opposition the ball that many more times," Kreiger said. "That catches up with you."

Those turnovers helped Warsaw grab a 41-22 lead midway through the fourth quarter. From there, the Eagles went on a 10-1 run to cut the lead to 42-32 with 2:22 remaining.

As momentum was shifting, Harter put her regulars back in the contest, shoring up the big win.

"I did get a lot of girls into the game to work against pressure and get some work on the offensive end," Harter said. "But with Columbia City still applying a press, we didn't handle that too well, so I had to get my regulars back in."

The regulars built the lead back up, resulting in the lopsided score and Columbia City's fourth-straight loss.

Warsaw gets back into Northern Lakes Conference play Saturday, traveling to Northridge High School for a 6:15 p.m. junior varsity tipoff.
