In his 19th season as Warsaw Community High School's girls golf coach, a season that has turned into a going away party for the well-liked skipper as he will step down after this season, Turner is taking the Lady Tigers to the state finals for the first time.[[In-content Ad]]Warsaw advanced to Friday's first round of the state finals at Legends of Indiana in Franklin by shooting a runner-up score of 323 in Saturday's regional at Noble Hawk Golf Links in Kendallville.
"This season has been very special," said Turner, who coached the Lady Tigers for 16 years, retired, and then returned three seasons ago. "I didn't really want to come back (three years ago). Things started off a little rough, but we got better and made a lot of improvement. These girls really want to win, and they've proved that this year. They don't care who shoots what, they just go out and get it done. We don't have any outstanding individuals, we play as a team."
Playing as a team has led the Lady Tigers to a outstanding season.
Warsaw finished the regular season with a 17-0 record and a Northern Lakes Conference championship.
A week ago, the Lady Tigers repeated as sectional champions, beating rival Plymouth by one stroke.
And now, after a balanced attack in the regional, Warsaw added a state finals berth to its list of accomplishments.
"I really believe good things happen to good people," said Turner. "These girls have worked hard, and they're very classy young ladies. They've represented Warsaw Community High School and Kosciusko County very well in every thing they've done."
The top three teams, as well as the top three individuals not on an advancing team, advanced to the state finals.
DeKalb won the regional with a 314, while Warsaw and East Noble advanced with a 323 and 329, respectively.
Elkhart Memorial finished fourth with a 341, followed in the 12-team field by Carroll (342), NorthWood (344), Plymouth (346), Homestead (350), Rochester (353), Fort Wayne Canterbury (357), New Haven (374) and Angola (389).
"We played well," said Turner. "We played smart. We hadn't had a really outstanding round to tell us how good we could be. We played well all season, but never had that great round. Today we played pretty well. I'd have taken a 340 today. To shoot a 323, I'm very happy."
Advancing to the state finals as individuals are Elkhart Memorial's Haley King, NorthWood's Amy Thompson and Carroll's Ashley Kees.
King and Thompson both carded 74s, while Kees finished with a 75.
King walkd away with medalist honors after she defeated Kees in a playoff.
Wawasee's Krista Zurcher competed as an invdividual and finished with a 90.
Senior Alyssa Cameron turned in the fourth-best score of the day Saturday and led Warsaw with a 77 on the par-70 course.
Cameron shot a triple bogey on the first hole and was 6-over after four holes before settling down and finding her stride.
"A.C. was in the zone," Turner said of Cameron. "She started out with a 7 on hole No. 1, and then she got it back together. She played a very nice round."
Senior Audrey Petro and sophomore Sarah Hartle carded 81s for the Lady Tigers, while senior foreign exchange student Laksika Kannasut turned in an 84 and junior Kayla Hutcherson finished with a 92.
Hutcherson will be the first Warsaw player to tee off Friday, as she is scheduled to begin her state finals round at 10:09 a.m.
The top nine teams, as well as any team within 12 strokes of the leader, will advance to Saturday's second round. Also advancing will be any individual within four strokes of the leader.
"This has been a really special season," said Turner. "This is my last season, but I want it to go as long as it can. Hopefully we've got two more rounds."
