Warsaw Girls Finish Off Goshen

The difficult part of Senior Night is just getting through the emotions of the whole affair and getting on to the business at hand - playing the game.
Warsaw did just that Thursday in the wrap up game of the regular season.
The Tigers came out of the gates slowly in the first half, but slowly became more dominant as the game wore on and finally moved the lead into double digits, cruising to a 41-26 win over Goshen to finish 5-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference. NorthWood beat Concord to win the NLC title outright with a 6-0 mark.
Warsaw got off to a rough start by shooting just 1 of 14 from the field in the first quarter and added a 4 of 13 performance in the second quarter.
The Tigers found themselves trailing Goshen (8-10) 12-6 midway through the second stanza when they picked themselves up and ran off nine straight points to take a 15-12 halftime lead.
"Even though we struggled to score points in the first quarter, we played hard," Warsaw coach Will Wienhorst said. "There was a big difference from Tuesday night to tonight. In fact, I think we tried too hard. I was very pleased with our emotions; I thought we were focused even though we missed a lot of shots early."
Warsaw began to pull away in the second, extending the lead to 27-15 on a Katie Elliott jumper and pretty much never looking back after that.
In the second half, the Tigers showed the effort that was missing in the first half and somewhat in their tough NLC loss two nights earlier to NorthWood.
After allowing NorthWood to shoot over 60 percent from the field, the Tigers held the Redskins on Thursday to just 10 of 41 shooting. Guards Laura Litwiller and Inga Snyder combined to hit only 3 of 21 shots from the field.
"We do have a very good halfcourt defense, NorthWood just played great basketball on Tuesday," Wienhorst said. "We look at Tuesday's loss and look at so many positive things. One of the things was if you are going to lose, go out and play as hard as you can and not stand around. You can't guarantee scores, but when it comes sectional time, we are going to play, we are going to attack the basket and not stand around like we have 7 of the 8 games in the last half of this season."
Sherri Ross led the Tigers with 10 points, while Katie Elliott added nine points and 12 rebounds, and Sheila Whitaker had eight points, including two three-pointers.
"I was sure glad to see Sheila get on track and get a couple of threes and gain some confidence," Wienhorst said.
Warsaw, which finishes the regular season one game better than last year at 12-6, hosts Tippecanoe Valley Tuesday in the first game of the Warsaw Sectional at 6 p.m.
"We are going to focus in on what we need to do to be successful," Wienhorst said. [[In-content Ad]]
