Warsaw Girls Feast On Whitko

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

A day after families everywhere ate turkey and celebrated Thanksgiving, Warsaw's varsity girls basketball team feasted on the Whitko Lady Wildcats.

Powered by an inside-outside combo that had four players score in double figures, the Lady Tigers carved up Whitko 82-33 Friday night.[[In-content Ad]]"We've consistenly had four girls score in double figures, and it hasn't always been the same four," said Warsaw coach Michelle Harter. Kaelee Sands did a great job stepping up and playing like a senior, and Kelci Freds is doing a great job leading this team. Then you have two good post players in Sarah Shilling and Kayla Stout. They did a great job inside tonight."

Freds and Sands scored 16 points each, while Shilling and Stout chipped in with 10 points each.

Stout led Warsaw with nine rebounds.

Ryesha Jackson chipped in with eigth points and six rebounds, while Lindsay Baker added six points and five rebounds.

"Lindsay Baker and Ryesha Jackson both came off the bench and did some really nice things for us," said Harter. "It's nice when you can pull kids off the bench and you don't have a dropoff in scoring."

All 14 girls on Warsaw's varsity roster played and 12 of them scored in the 49-point win, which improved the Lady Tigers to 3-0 and allowed them to keep the Golden Horseshoe, a traveling trophy for Kosciusko County-area girls teams.

Amber Plummer scored four points for Warsaw, while Kaitlin Reichard and Danielle Tat added three points each and Creigh Ogle, Tiffany Tat and Sarah Heagy scored two points each.

Friday's offensive output marked the first time the Lady Tigers have scored 82 points in a game since an 88-42 win over Concord on Jan. 24, 2004.

"It was two different teams," said Whitko coach Rob Bell, referring to his young team and Harter's experienced group of players. "I told Michelle (Harter) before the game, her team reminds me of us two years ago when were older and had veteran players. We're young right now. We play up one game and down the next."

The Lady Tigers returned four starters from last season's 14-8 team. Warsaw's starting lineup Friday consisted of four seniors and a junior.

Whitko, on the other hand, has just one senior on its roster.

The Lady Wildcat's starting lineup included a freshman, two sophomores, a junior and a senior.

Experience won out Friday evening, as the Lady Tigers led 18-12 after one quarter of play, but outscored Whitko 64-21 over the final three quarters.

Warsaw opened the second stanza with a 15-0 run and went on to lead 46-18 at the half and 62-27 after three quarters of play.

"I practiced them too long this morning," Bell said of his players. "We were a little tired coming out. I didn't make the right adjustments. I didn't put is in position to win, or give us a chance."

Sophomore Karissa Olinske led Whitko with seven points, while classmate Micaela Sylvester added six points.

Sophomores Katie Reiff and Cassie Jones and junior Danielle Rose scored four points each for the Lady Wildcats, who fell to 0-6 on the season.

In the last three games, Whitko has lost to Class 4A No. 7 Elkhart Memorial, 3A No. 1 and defending state champion Fort Wayne Elmhurst and the Lady Tigers, who are ranked 14th in 4A and who own a 25-3 advantage in the all-time series with the Lady Wildcats.

"Whitko has a good team," said Harter. "They've played some very experienced teams already this season. Come tournament time, that will help them get better. They're a young team, and I'm sure they'll continue to improve."

Whitko turned the ball over 38 times against the Lady Tigers, leading to 35 points for Warsaw.

The Lady Tigers struggled with turnovers a bit themselves, turning the ball over 20 times, but Whitko only turned Warsaw's miscues into seven points.

Warsaw is in action again Wednesday, hosting Fort Wayne Northrop, while Whitko opens Three Rivers Conference play at North Miami on Dec. 5.
