Warsaw Girls Fall In NLC Opener
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Warsaw struggled from the free-throw line while Plymouth hit 13 straight at one point from the charity stripe.
The Tigers turned the ball over 18 times and looked totally out of sync at times on offense.
Yet Warsaw still nearly pulled off the upset of No. 6 (3A) Plymouth Saturday afternoon before falling 51-46 in girls basketball action at the Tiger Den.
It was the Northern Lakes Conference opener for both squads.
And that's the frustrating thing for Warsaw coach John Snyder.
At times the Tigers looked like a potential player in the NLC.
Warsaw jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Plymouth to start the game as freshman Kelci Freds scored the Tigers first five points.
The Tigers offense then dwindled and Warsaw trailed 15-10 after the first quarter.
The Pilgrims built their lead to double digits at 43-33 with 4:18 left in the game before Warsaw came storming back and trailed by just one possession at 49-46 with 16.9 seconds left in the game.
The Tigers were never able to have a chance at tying the ballgame as Heidi Keiser hit two free throws with 6.4 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
Warsaw had a chance to tie the game after Plymouth's Jessica Centa missed two free thorws with 1:22 left in regulation and the Tigers trailing 47-44.
The Tigers failed to block out after Centa's second miss and Brittany Payne slid in and pulled the offensive board and earned herself two free throws for Plymouth.
"They got to the loose balls today," said Snyder. "Things like that, those were some of the things that got us beat. And they are fixable things. Our effort was poor in some areas."
Snyder said he didn't feel as if his players were purposefully not blocking out or making hustle plays. He however couldn't pinpoint the problem.
Warsaw lost to a Plymouth squad that is arguably the best two-loss team in the state.
The Pilgrims two losses came at the hands of No. 3 (3A) South Bend St. Joseph's and No. 3 (4A) South Bend Washington.
The Tigers however had a chance to win the game despite going more than eight minutes of game time, from the middle point of the third quarter until the fourth, without connecting on a field goal.
Warsaw also fell victim to Plymouth's trapping defense and looked completely bothered by the Pilgrims at times in the second half.
The Tigers committed five turnovers in the third quarter and attempted just six shots from the field in the quarter.
Danielle DeGeeter led Warsaw in defeat with 15 points and nine rebounds. that included a bucket off an offense rebound with less than a minute left in the game to draw the Tigers to within three.
Freds finished with 10 points, eight of which came in the first quarter.
Megan Davis came off the bench to score four points and pull down three rebounds while Carlye Snider scored six points off the Warsaw bench.
The Tigers' bench outscored Plymouth's 20-6.
With so much production off the bench, Snyder conceeded a shakeup in the starting lineup could be possible.
"It's been discussed and it will continue to be discussed," said Synder of a possible lineup change. "There's a lot of chemistry issues and leadership issues that factor in. We're struggling so much offensively though we have to do something at some point."
The Tigers gave a gritty performance on defense as they limited Plymouth to a 13 of 34 (38 percent) performance from the field.
The Pilgrims won the game at the free-throw line as they connected on 22 of 30 from line.
Elaine Hessel led the way for Plymouth with 22 points.
Warsaw, 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in the NLC, hosts Columbia City Tuesday. The junior varsity contest is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
