Shooting 48 percent on the night, Warsaw (10-7) breezed past Concord (3-15) 55-29, picking up its third Northern Lakes Conference win of the year.[[In-content Ad]]At 3-2 in the NLC, the Tigers aren't mathematically eliminated from winning the crown, as Elkhart Memorial sits at 5-0 with two games remaining, the last being at Warsaw Jan. 31.
To even stay in contention for a share of the conference title, the Tigers first had to deal with Concord, losers of 11 straight coming in. And it didn't take long to find out Warsaw was only going to add to that streak, opening the game with a 17-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
"We hit some shots early, and I think that set the tone," Warsaw coach John Snyder said. "I really appreciated our offensive and defensive execution. I thought we did a good job of taking Concord out of what they do best. That's getting the ball into their post players and making it a game where their guards are full speed."
Along with keeping Concord out of its comfort zone, Warsaw sophomore Kelci Freds sparked the Tigers, scoring 10 of her game-high 14 points in the opening quarter. Despite playing just 14 minutes, due to foul trouble and the lopsided score, Freds finished with 5-of-8 shooting night, scoring double her season average.
"I think Kelci's finding her shooting stroke," Snyder said. "She's getting a little more comfortable in what we're doing - and confident. She's a heckuva player, and when we're all playing at a higher level, we're difficult to defend."
Illustrating Snyder's point, while Freds was scoring from the outside, post players Kate Denlinger and Alex Glenn scored eight and 10 points, respectively, inside.
Snyder has long expected strong post play out of Denlinger, but to have the slender Glenn making plays against girls routinely bigger and stronger is a definite bonus.
"She has great footwork, she keeps the ball high and has good height," Snyder said of Glenn. "She had one possession in the first half, where I thought she could have drop-stepped and had a shot at a basket. I talked to her about it, and a couple more times down the court, she was in the same position, and drop-stepped. So it's good to see her back in an offensive-minded mentality."
Despite having Freds and Denlinger on the bench throughout the second quarter with foul trouble, Warsaw still outscored Concord 16-4, resulting in a 33-10 lead at the half.
"It is tough to focus," Snyder said of keeping his girls motivated in a blowout. "I told the girls at halftime, 'I'm not gonna try to kid ya and tell ya, let's play like it's 0-0. You guys are smart enough to know we have a 23-point lead.' There were some things I thought we could clean up from the first half, and wanted to work on those and play better in those areas."
The second half only saw Warsaw continue its good play, eventually assuring that every girl in a Tigers uniform got into the action.
"I was happy to see that every girl that came in, really played well," Snyder said.
Among those reserves were Cendall Ogle and Megan Davis. Each girl only scored two points, but the 5-foot-5 Ogle did tie Denlinger with a team-high six rebounds, while also dishing out a team-high two assists, the same as senior sister Courtney Ogle. On the defensive end, Davis led the Tigers with three blocked shots and two steals, the same amount of thefts as Freds.
After a stop at South Bend Adams Thursday, the Tigers will be back in NLC play Saturday when the NorthWood Panthers come to town for a 6:15 p.m. JV tipoff.
