Warsaw Girls Claim First Swim Sectional Title
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Tod Giles knows that this year's version of the Warsaw girls swim team is special.
Giles, the custodian at the Warsaw Community High School pool, said he's spent more time on a ladder changing the big board of pool records at the north end of the pool this year, than any other.
"And it's a big ladder," mused Giles, putting extra emphasis on big.
Giles and a standing room only crowd at the WCHS pool looked on as the Tigers won the school's first sectional crown in girls swimming.
"It's about time," said Warsaw senior Amanda Brown. "It feels great."
Brown, who's been swimming for Aukeman since she was 8, finished sixth in the 200 IM with a personal best time of 2:28.22
Brown along with her other teammates came into the week wondering how long it'd been since they won a sectional crown.
"Well, we were all wondering how long it had been since we won a sectional championship, and coach said he'd tell us after we won," said Warsaw senior Becca Noggle. "And they said it was the first, we never knew that, so it's pretty incredible."
Noggle made a late comeback in the 100 freestyle to edge Culver Academies' Kerry O'Donnell. And it was Culver who pushed the Tigers along with the rest of the sectional field.
"The girls really stepped up, and if we didn't win an event, we had more depth than the other team, so that's why we won by a good margain," said Aukeman, who was named sectional coach of the year.
Aukeman was impressed with his team's ability to push themselves and post improved scores from the prelims that took place just two days earlier.
"Becca swam very well today. Katy Taylor had two personal bests today. We had a lot of best times thoughout the day and a lot of personal records. It was a great day," said Aukeman.
Taylor was apart of the wining 200 freestyle and medley teams along with a second place finish in the 200 IM.
As for Aukeman, being the coach of the program's first sectional is pretty satisfying.
"This is feeling really nice. All the girls swam really well on Thursday, put us in a place to win it today. And they just did a great job all year long," said Aukeman.
The day's events were delayed three hours due to fog but it didn't leave the Tigers any less sharp.
Warsaw won three of the first four events on the day.
As for other locals teams, Wawasee finished third with 243 points. Leigh Froebe was one of the Warrior highlights finishing second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:04.42. Wawasee's Jennifer Sands finished in the diving competition with a score of 323.10. And while the Warriors wanted to place higher, the results weren't due to a lack of effort.
"We were hoping to finish a little better than that but we swam everything you could ask out of our girls today. We had a bunch of lifetime bests," said Wawasee head coach Roger Karns.
Tippecanoe Valley finished ninth with 39 points, while Manchester finished fifth with 89 points.
Maria Flora finished fifth in the diving for Manchester with a score of 270.10 while Courtney Ingold finished third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:54.84.
Flora and Wawasee's Sands compete in the diving regional at Penn High School Tuesday night along with Warsaw's Tara Stayer.
Warsaw's 200 medley relay team of Hollar, Taylor, Munsch and Dick will advance to state in Indianapolis at the Indiana University Natatourium on the campus of IUPUI.
The 200 freestyle team and 400 freestyle team of Jalyn Haughee, Tracy Thallemer, Noggle and Munsch along with Alexis Hollar in the 50 freestyle, Noggle in the 100 and 200 freestyle will be Warsaw's other chances to grab a state crown.
Prelims began Friday at 6 p.m. with the finals taking place Saturday. The diving begins at 9 a.m. while the consolation and finals start at 1 p.m.
