Warsaw Girl Plans Lemonade Stand Saturday To Raise Funds For Riley

Catherine Floyd wants to make sure children like her friend Rachel Doyle have financial help when they have treatments at Riley Hospital for Children.

That is why Floyd, 8, Warsaw, came up with the idea to have a lemonade stand Saturday to raise funds for children at Riley.

The lemonade stand will be from 7 a.m. to noon. Floyd will accept financial donations and sell lemonade and water.

People who want to stop by the lemonade stand should look for a sign at the entrance of Pheasant Ridge addition in Warsaw directing them to the stand.

The proceeds from the lemonade stand will go toward helping children at Riley Hospital for Children.

Not only will people who stop by the stand receive lemonade, but they also will receive Riley stickers and peel-off tattoos.

Floyd, who will be a third-grader at Eisenhower Elementary School in the fall, and Doyle, 6, who will be a first-grader at Harrison Elementary School, met at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Warsaw, where Floyd's father, Stuart is pastor.

Doyle was diagnosed in 2006 with acute lymphoblastic lymphoma leukemia and was 2-1/2 at the time. She has been in remission for a year.

Floyd has seen her friend battle leukemia, and she wanted to be able to raise funds for children like Doyle who need treatment at Riley.

"I wanted to do something to help kids like my friend Rachel and came up with the idea for a lemonade stand after watching a musical where there was a lemonade stand," Floyd said.

She said she told her mother Heidi about the idea, who thought it was a great idea.

Floyd knows first hand what it is like to have someone she loves struggle with a life-threatening battle.

Heidi was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004.

"I have learned to give back from my mother and taught that to my daughter, and she is old enough now to remember what I went through when I was sick and wants to help others," Heidi said.

Doyle went to Riley to receive treatments after being diagnosed with leukemia and went through a 26-month treatment program.

She now has check ups every other month at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

The first three months of the treatment, the Doyle family was making weekly trips to the hospital for chemotherapy, bone marrow biopsies and spinal taps.

She now goes to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, every other month for check ups.

Doyle is part of Riley's national case study where her treatment is broken down to her DNA and tailored to find a cure for her leukemia. She is in one of three groups for the case study.

Doyle said she is happy her friend is having a lemonade stand.

"It means a lot to know my friend is helping other kids like me," Doyle said.

Doyle's parents, Tony and Faith, said they are appreciative of Catherine's lemonade stand idea.

"When you go to Riley or a hospital that has kids that are sick it breaks your heart, but we are thankful for all the friends like Catherine who help raise funds," Tony said.

Faith said her daughter has been a fighter.

"Each time we took our daughter home from Riley it was sad because I knew there were families who would not take their kids home," Faith said. "Riley is a hard place to go to, but when kids want to help other kids like this it touches your heart."

Doyle is one of the featured walk honorees in this year's annual Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk.

The walk is Sept. 23 at Rodeheaver Auditorium, Winona Lake.

Rachel will participate in the walk with her parents, sister, Sarah, and brother, Adam. Their team name is "Rachel's Walkers." The Floyd family also will be on the team.
