Warsaw Flips Over Wawasee
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
On Tuesday night, Wawasee gymnastics coach Nika Prather decided to make a prediction after her team had been beaten by Warsaw for just the second time in school history.
"I don't think it will happen again," Prather said. "It all comes down to sectional. If everyone stays healthy, and we have a full team, I think it will be close. I don't think the girls will let it happen again."
Warsaw defeated Wawasee 96.4-92.3 for the Tigers first win over the Warriors since 1992. Wawasee did compete without one of its top gymnasts, Darcy Replogle. She hasn't competed yet this year but could be back by next week. That's why Prather said the Warriors would win if they had a full team.
"It's very exciting for the girls (to beat Wawasee)," Warsaw coach Amanda Campbell said. "It's a big meet for them and they did a great job."
Warsaw took three of the top four spots in the all-around led by freshman Jillian Letsch. She placed first in the vault and the floor and tied for first on the bars. Those results placed her in first in the all-around.
Wawasee's Christa Olson was second in the all-around with a first place in the beam and a tie with Letsch for first in the bars. She also tied for third on the vault.
Warsaw's Kari Lipply and Callie Edgington tied for third place. Lipply took second on the vault and the floor, while Edgington placed third on the bars.
Warsaw held the lead from the opening event and never surrendered it or even gave the Warriors much hope.
The Tigers started on the vault while the Warriors were on the bars. The Tigers scored a 24.9 behind Letsch's 8.45, Lipply's 8.25 and Kim Love's 8.2. Wawasee struggled on the bars with a 22.55. Olson had the only score above a 7.5 with an 8.45.
As the teams switched positions, Warsaw held a fairly comfortable lead and extended that. The Tigers had a 24.9 on the bars to a 24.3 for Wawasee on the vault. Letsch scored an 8.45 and Edgington scored an 8.35. Love scored an 8.1 to help the Tigers. Olson put up an 8.2 for Wawasee on the vault and Lisa Ummel grabbed an 8.15.
From that point, it was almost a lock unless the Tigers somehow squandered away the large lead.
Wawasee did chip away at the lead on the third event as Olson scored an 8.15 on the floor and Angie Beer added a 7.75 and Katie Brown scored a 7.65. Warsaw was shaky on the beam as nobody scored as high as a 7.5.
"We were very solid on both the vault and the uneven bars," Campbell said. "We had a terrible time on the balance beam, but they came back on the floor excercise and just did not give up."
Wawasee hadn't cut into the lead enough on the third rotation, especially having the difficult beam last. Warsaw turned in four scores better than 8.0 on the floor to walk away with the win.
"I never like to lose to anybody," Prather said. "But it's really hard to lose to Warsaw. When you're a Wawasee Warrior, you're programmed. You just don't want to lose to Warsaw."
Warsaw will host Huntington North on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. while Wawasee will be at Lakeland on Thursday at 6 p.m.
