Warsaw boys basketball coach Al Rhodes called it a big play. And of course when it happened, the Tiger cheering section applauded appropriately.

With 2:25 remaining in the fourth quarter of Friday's home game with Northern Lakes Conference rival Elkhart Memorial, Warsaw 6-foot-4 senior Josh Buck put down a dunk that gave the Tigers a 10-point lead, 56-46. Warsaw went on to win 68-50.

Not only did Buck's dunk ignite the crowd, it gave Warsaw back the momentum it needed to close out the feisty Crimson Chargers.

Warsaw improves to 11-5 overall and to 4-2 in the NLC, while Memorial falls to 5-10 and 3-3.

The Tigers jumped out to a 9-3 lead with 3:57 remaining in the opening quarter and led 16-13 after after eight minutes of action. Aided by three consecutive field goals from 6-7 senior Paul Finnegan, Warsaw started the second stanza with a 10-0 run that gave the Tigers a 29-13 advantage with 5:47 left in the first half.

"I thought that we had some good passes early," Rhodes said. "Our passes were pretty effective. I think that's what created the early lead. Give Elkhart Memorial credit, they sped us up and came back."

With 3:47 left in the second quarter, Warsaw led 29-13. With 1:16 remaining in the third quarter, Warsaw's lead was cut to four, 42-38.

Much of the Crimson Chargers' offense in that stretch came from 5-10 junior sharpshooter Erik Smith. With

Memorial down 41-30, Smith hit consecutive threes, and Memorial then got two free throws from Quennel Young.

"Late in the second quarter they started trapping," Rhodes said of the Crimson Chargers. "We actually had some nice passes, but we missed some lay-ups. I think we lost track of No. 10 (Smith) a couple times. They kept biting at us."

Smith finished with a game-high 22 points, while Young added 14. Junior Scott Murphy chipped in with seven.

Buck and Greg Clay paced the Tigers with 13 points each, while Brian Johnson added 10. Chris Clay chipped in with nine, while Finnegan added eight.

The Tigers led 48-40 with 7:32 remaining in the game, but consecutive field goals by Murphy and Young cut Warsaw's lead to four, 48-44.

The Tigers then outscored the Crimson Chargers 20-6 the rest of the way. Warsaw will be in action tonight at 10-5 Marion.
